Cricket in perspective
The memory of Travis Smith will be honoured ? along with that of former St.George?s all rounder Cal Wade ? during a minute of silence prior to St.George?s Cricket Club?s Cup Match trial match with Bailey?s Bay today at Wellington Oval, beginning at 10 a.m..
Smith, who represented the East Enders in three Cup Match classics after debuting as a colt in 2002, was killed in a two vehicle accident on Thursday night on North Shore Road, Devonshire.
The diminutive off spinner was dropped from St.George?s? Cup Match side last year ? three years after claiming ten wickets on his Cup Match debut.
Smith?s passing has left the local cricket fraternity in a state of shock, however all matches will go ahead as originally planned.
At White Hill Field today, champions Willow Cuts put their title on the line against Warwick in the second round of the Western Counties, while a full schedule of Premier and First Division limited overs league matches will be on tap tomorrow at venues across the Island.
In Premier Division play, defending champions Southampton Rangers will look to rebound from last weekend?s shock loss to Bailey?s Bay when they host tenants Warwick at Southampton Oval.
Fellow league title contenders Social Club host Flatts at Devonshire Rec while St.David?s and Bailey?s Bay lock horns at Lords in what will be a prelude to the July 22 Eastern Counties opening round clash involving the two clubs.
Western Stars host Somerset at St.John?s Field.
In First Division play, a three-horse race for promotion involving St.George?s, Cleveland County and Devonshire could possibly take on a new shape.
An under strength St.George?s are away to Leg Trappers at Sea Breeze Oval while Devonshire and Cleveland do battle at Wellington Oval.
Elsewhere, PHC take on Police at White Hill Field and Willow Cuts host Somerset Bridge at Somerset Cricket Club.
