Minors happy opening for now
Solid innings of 29 and 67 in his only two appearances as opener might have cemented a place at the top of the order for hard-hitting Dean Minors.
But the veteran wicketkeeper insists he isn’t getting carried away by his early success.
Asked after a work-out in the Pretoria nets whether he saw the move as permanent, Minors replied: “I honestly don’t know. I’m just taking it one game at a time.” But he admitted: “I am enjoying it ... it’s a different type of game for me.
“Normally when I come in down the order, the ball’s worn a bit, hits a bit straighter. Now it’s moving around a bit, and I have to admit I do like it coming on. I still I have to make some adjustments and that’s what we’ve been working on today.”
Minors’ batting has been one of the talking points on a tour that so far hasn’t produced too many highlights.
“So far I’ve felt pretty good,” he added. “You know the coach came to me and asked me would I go in to do a job. And obviously I’m going to do anything to help the team.
“It’s not about my individual success, it’s about what’s good for the team. We’ve been looking at target scores and that’s what I’ve been basically focusing on.
“I wouldn’t say I’m used to opening, but I think the fact that I’m a wicketkeeper and used to watching the bowling early on is a help. I try to take that into my game, that hand-eye coordination thing.”
