Adams inspires upset win

Cleveland 191-3 Cleveland player-coach Allan Douglas summed up his side's surprise win over Bailey's Bay at Wellington Oval simply: "The team that scores the most singles wins.'' The Harris Bay team made victory look so easy as they followed up last year's Knockout Cup semi-final triumph with another limited overs win over their Eastern Counties rivals in this Premier Division clash.

And while Bay began at a breakaway pace -- 50 scored by the sixth over, 67 off 10 and 89 from 15 before leaving 16.3 overs unused at the end of their innings -- Cleveland showed the more sensible approach.

After 10 overs they had 34 on the board and the 100 came up in the 20th over as captain Aaron Adams led from the front with 87 not out with nine fours and two sixes.

Opener Carlton Smith, who went off injured during the second wicket stand before coming back with a runner and finishing unbeaten on 59, stayed with his captain in an unbeaten fourth wicket stand of 83 in 15 overs.

The pair were brought together after Bay took two wickets on 105 and 108 but in the end that only decreased Cleveland's winning margin.

After losing Cal Dill in the first over and Glenn Blakeney in the fifth when the score was 36, Bay recovered through a third wicket stand of 53 between Roger Trott (43) and Charlie Marshall (30). They then slumped to 108-6 before brothers Ricky (23) and Corey Hill (19) and Dennis Pilgrim (31 not out) offered some resistance in the tailend.

Gregory Talbot led the Cleveland bowlers with five for 52 while Andre Smith finished with three for 49.

Southampton 73 St. George's 78-4 St. George's scored another comfortable victory over Southampton Rangers this season, dismissing their opponents for just 73 at Southampton Oval in the opening round of the Premier Division Overs yesterday.

And had it not been for Keith Wainwright's 37 not out in two-and-a-half hours, the match would have been over even sooner.

Wainwright was brought to the wicket in only the second over following the dismissal of Sheridan Ming. By the 13th over, he had watched four partners depart with just 22 on the board, two of them being run outs as St. George's seized control.

The veteran batsman battled on as wickets continued to fall around him and his 37 with three fours and a six was the only score in double figures.

Herbie Bascome, Gregg Foggo and Ryan Steede each took two wickets from their 10 overs, Bascoming conceding 34, Foggo nine with five maidens and Steede 19.

Eugene Foggo and Mark (Beaver) Ray, on his debut, each took one wicket.

Despite losing Dean Minors on 13 and Sinclair Gibbons when the score was 24, St. George's were never in danger of losing and captain Clay Smith made sure with an unbeaten 31 with five boundaries as victory came up in 17.3 overs.

Carl Garzette took two for 21 off 5.3 overs for Rangers.

Willow Cuts 186 Police 160 Brian Gibbons, Rodney Fubler and Kevin Fubler combined to take seven wickets as Willow Cuts defeated a powerful Police team by 26 runs at Police Field.

Chasing a winning target of 187, Police seemed capable of pulling off the victory -- until Cuts' three-pronged attack hit home.

Gibbons led the way by claiming three for 28 off 10 overs with a maiden while Rodney had two for 30 off nine overs with two maidens and Fubler two for 32 off 10 overs with one maiden.

Two other bowlers lending vital assistance were Charles Swan and Richard Basden, Swan taking one for 31 off 10 overs and Basden one for 29 off 5.2 overs, including the vital last wicket of Daniel Reece with five overs left.

Police at one point were comfortably placed at 135 for five with Peter Philpott and Dwayne Leverock looking secure. But once Philpott was dismissed for 29 the wickets fell at a rapid rate.

Leverock was the second highest scorer with 24 while Stevie Lightbourne stroked 21, opener Donovan Livingston 15, skipper Dennis Archer 13 and Tyrone Smith 13.

Earlier Willow Cuts reached their respectable total thanks to fine knocks by Jermaine Warner who scored 38 and skipper Dexter Basden who hit 36. Rodney Fubler was not out on 24, Cordell Gilbert followed with 23 while Dwight Basden had 16.

Roger Blades snatched two for 21 off nine overs while Dwayne Leverock had two for 40 off nine overs.

Devonshire Rec. 145 Western Stars 146-8 Cleon Scotland slammed 52 not out and spinner Hasan Durham took four for 13 off 10 overs, including four maidens, as Western Stars defeated Devonshire Rec. by two wickets at Devonshire.

Rec reached a reasonable total thanks mainly to the batting of two senior players, opener Dexter Smith whose knock of 56 was his highest of the season and skipper Anthony Amory who followed with 43. But nobody else got into double figures.

Premier cricket From Page 19 In addition to Durham, Stars received solid bowling support from Gary Brangman and Dale Fox. Brangman had three for 14 off 9.5 overs with five maidens while Fox finished with two for 35 off 10 overs.

Scotland's game-winning performance produced three sixes and seven fours. Also among the runs were Durham with 14, skipper Arnold Manders 14, Gregory Sampson 13 and Treadwell Gibbons 13.

Amory led his team in bowling with three for 30 ff 9.5 overs while Anthony Edwards had two for 20 and Leon Place two for 46.

AARON ADAMS -- his unbeaten knock of 87 led Cleveland's victory charge.
