Aljame seeks to lengthen goal streak against Puerto Rico

Scorer: Aljame Zuill

Aljame Zuill will be looking to extend his remarkable goal scoring streak when he slips on a national team strip tomorrow night at National Sports Centre (NSC).

Bermuda's new-look senior national squad continue their 2010 World Cup preparations with two timely international friendlies against Puerto Rico this week, with Zuill again poised to shoulder the Island's hopes up front in a 4-5-1 formation.

The veteran striker has netted nine goals in his last four outings at club and national level, including a superb hat trick in Bermuda's inspiring 4-2 win over St.Kitt's at the NSC last month.

"I have been working on my finishing and trying to give it everything I can, which seems to be working out at the moment. I just have to give thanks for the purple patch that I am in and try to keep striving from there," Zuill said.

Zuill bagged a brace, albeit in a losing cause representing club side Devonshire Colts last Sunday, to virtually pick himself for this week's assignments against the Puerto Ricans. And he is confident Bermuda can obtain favorable results against their Caribbean Football Union rivals.

Zuill said: "We just need to try and keep possession of the ball and string together passes before we attack, which is something the coach (Keith Tucker) has been working on for the past couple of weeks.

"If we can achieve this then I think everything should work out well for us because we have really gelled together. But when we are up on teams we have to tire them out by keeping possession and making them chase after us."

As for his red-hot goal-scoring streak, Zuill said: "As long as the service is there I should be alright and hopefully I can carry on scoring. I'm hitting a bit of form at the moment and really enjoying it."

Meanwhile, national coach Tucker was expected to name a 20-man squad for this week's matches against Puerto Rico following last night's practise session at the NSC.

In addition, national team skipper Kwame Steede, defender Omar Shakir and midfielder Sammy Degraff were all scheduled to undergo last minute fitness exams to determine whether or not they are fit enough for national team selection.

Steede did not play in Devonshire Cougars' 5-1 demolition of Ireland Rangers last weekend. However, Shakir and Degraff did see action for their respective club sides PHC and North Village to give indication they are fit enough to resume their international careers.

US pros Khano Smith and John Barry Nusum as well as PHC utility player Corey Dowling have all been ruled out through injury.
