Arorash's late strike seals it for Vasco
Steven Arorash made it look so confoundedly simple when he grabbed the winning goal from a rebound three minutes from regulation time to give Vasco a deserved victory in this Dudley Eve clash at BAA last night.
It was actually a rebound from his own drive that goalkeeper Antoine Lightbourne had originally done well to save, but the Dandy Town 'keeper was unable to do anything much about Arorash's second attempt.
With precious little time left in the game and the score tied 1-1, Sinclair Gibbons raced down the left flank and crossed for Arorash to have two attempts for the winner.
It was Gibbons who had earlier created the opening that led to the first goal for Vasco after 47 minutes.
Again in this instance he raced down the left side of the field and supplied a sneaky pass to Voorhees Astwood who, amazingly from an acute angle on the left, sent home a blast from 14 yards to give Vasco a 1-0 lead.
The goal ended a stalemate in a game that, until that stage was uninspiring with little to chose between the two sides.
It was mystifying to see how two of the supposedly stronger teams in local soccer were both struggling to reach the penalty box in the first half.
However as time progressed Vasco were allowed to find their momentum and consequently finished the half in complete command.
The best chance for Vasco though came after 42 minutes when goalkeeper Lightbourne dived full length to his left to save a fierce shot that Astwood sent from 19 yards. This came shortly after Astwood squandered a chance from close in, putting a ball right harmlessly at Lightbourne.
Lionel Furbert forced goalkeeper Timmy Figureido to push his blast from 15 yards over for a corner after 15 minutes, this was Town's best chance during a half when their attack lacked ideas and ambition.
However once Astwood gave Vasco a 1-0 lead after 47 minutes, Town roared back with precision and technique that was clearly lacking in the first half and pinned Vasco down for awhile. After 53 minutes they should have scored but Darron Simons put his shot wide from 14 yards after doing well to get around Kentoine Jennings.
Vasco striker Dwight Basden followed this up by putting a shot wide from a cross by Corey Hill before Town went on to dominate for a long period, thanks to some fine work in midfield by Furbert and Troy Lewis.
But it wasn't until Nathan Webb came on for Simons to add much needed thrust into their attack that Town looked capable of scoring.
The equalising goal came when Webb was pulled down by Jennings in the penalty area, enabling Ascento Russell to covert the penalty awarded for the foul.
With the scores now tied and time running out Vasco lifted their game and threatened down the flanks with Hill and Astwood always willing to run hard at the defence.
It ws during one of these raids that Gibbons found Arorash with a delicate pass and the midfielder had sufficient time to fire two shots on goal -- the second attempt providing Vasco with the match-winner.
