Bay edge closer to Overs crown

Devonshire 126 Bailey's Bay put one hand on the Premier Division Overs title with another comprehensive victory, this time thrashing Devonshire by 171 runs at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday.

With only one match remaining, Bay, who meet St. David's, have a superior net run rate over St. George's, and need one more victory to make sure of the title.

They further improved that net run rate with another big score as Glenn Blakeney led the way with 77, including 11 fours and two sixes. Captain Charlie Marshall continued his recent good form with another half-century, this time scoring 62, including five fours and six sixes in the middle order while Irving Romaine scored an even 50.

Winston Trott led the Devonshire bowlers with three wickets while Leon Place and Lloyd Smith took two each.

The run chase was always going to be too steep for Devonshire, even though openers Dexter Smith and Donald Norford put on 52 for the first wicket.

Norford was high man with 29 while Smith scored 16. Only two other batsmen reached double figures in the total of 126, Leon Place with 21 and Trott with 19.

For the second straight match Blakeney led the Bay bowling, this time taking three for 27 while Clarkie Trott had two for 26 and Charlie Marshall the last two wickets off just four deliveries.

St. George's 195 Willow Cuts 191 St. George's had to sweat it out before hanging onto their unbeaten record this season as Willow Cuts fell just five runs short at Wellington Oval in a thrilling finish.

Initially the scores posted showed Willow Cuts falling just one run short when Charles Swan was run out on the fourth ball of the last over after Kevin Fubler called him for a risky single and Herbie Bascome's throw from short extra-cover beat Swan to the striker's end.

However there was some discrepency in the two scorebooks which later corresponded to show a four-run win for the home team who could only field 10 men. Victory would almost certain had been skipper Dexter Basden's had he not been stumped in the penultimate over, having paced Willow Cuts from the first ball of their innings.

His departure exposed the tailenders Charles Symonds and Swan and the pressure proved too much. Even so, the victory only just keeps St. George's in the title hunt as they must now score a resounding victory over Police in their final game to move ahead of Bay.

Next to Basden, Rodney Fubler scored a vital 19 to make it close going into the last few overs, while Dwayne Basden hit 17 earlier in the innings. Lionel Cann claimed three for 27, David Adams and Ricky Hodsoll both two for 17 and Eugene Foggo two for 46.

After losing Foggo in the first over, captain Clay Smith rebuilt the St George's innings with 77 while Sinclair Gibbons ran out of partners in the tailend and had to settle for 44 not out while opener Ryan Steede scored 30.

Charles Symonds claimed four for 41 to lead the Willow Cuts bowling.

Western Stars 141 Police 146-6 Opening batsman Andrew Rollins stroked 62 and veteran fast bowler Adrian King claimed four wickets for 31 runs to spearhead Police to a four-wicket victory over Western Stars at St. John's Field.

Rollins featured in two fine partnerships as Police chased their winning target of 142. First he and skipper Dennis Archer (15) put on 40 for the opening stand and then John Pitcher (24) came and added a further 57 with Rollins for the second wicket.

Rollins was eventually bowled with the score on 128, but Peter Philpott (11 not out) and Terry Thomas (seven not out) stayed around to help them reach the target.

Spinner Hasan Durham was the top bowler for Stars with three for 29 off nine overs, including a maiden.

Earlier skipper Manders saved Stars from turning in an embarrassingly low total with a sterling batting display, hammering 52 after his team were reeling at 38 for five.

Manders' knock included six fours and three sixes, the featured stand coming when he and Durham (15) added 45 for the sixth wicket.

Also among the runs for Stars were Anthony Manders with 18 not out, Cleon Scotland with 13 and Ricky Brangman 10.

Police bowlers were inspired from the first three overs when both Stars' openers Albert Steede (0) and Treadwell Gibbons (1) were dismissed with just five runs on the board.

King took his wicket haul off 10 overs while Peter Philpott snatched two for 21 off 4.2 overs and Ferdinand Thorne had two for 40 off nine overs.

St. David's 200-5 Warwick 198-5 The failure to score three runs off the final two balls of the game saw Warwick's spirited fightback evaporate in this match at Southampton Oval.

With their number six and seven bats at the wicket, Reginald Pitcher and Trent Simmons, Warwick were unable to get the vital runs with Pitcher finishing on 15 not out and Simmons undefeated on eight.

Chasing a winning target of 201, Warwick's batting was led by veteran Stevie Lightbourne who struck 61, including eight fours and one six. Johnny Nusum scored 47, Perry Scott 16 and Ritchie Foggo 14.

Graham Fox topped the bowling for St. David's with three for 59 off 10 overs.

Earlier St. David's had their innings curtailed by rain at 3.00 p.m., but still they reached a formidable score with Sammy Robinson stroking 71, including nine fours and a six. O.J.Pitcher followed with 46 and Graham Fox 39.

Reginald Pitcher took two for 28 off 10 overs while Caines had two for 40 off 5.2 overs.

OUT! -- Lionel Cann of St. George's is caught by Willow Cuts' Dwayne Basden off this delivery during action at Wellington Oval yesterday.
