Blazers too strong for punchless Rangers
Boulevard bashed Southampton Rangers into submission with a power-packed display yesterday.
But they left it until the last 20 minutes to make their punches tell against opponents lacking firepower up front.
Just when Boulevard's efforts seemed destined to count for nothing, they spared their blushes with a superb 70th-minute goal.
It followed a sweeping movement covering half the pitch at St. David's, and after some rare pressure from Rangers.
Forward Vernon Symonds picked up the ball around the halfway line.
He sprayed the ball wide to Dwight Warren, who appeared to be lining up a shot with his left foot in front of goal.
But with Rangers' defenders scampering back, he slipped the ball to striker Kenny Hill.
Hill rifled the ball high and past the advancing Rangers goalie Randy Darrell from around 12 yards.
The goal appeared to put fresh zip into Boulevard who laid seige to Rangers' goal.
The final push was rewarded with a 90th-minute tap-in by the all-action Warren.
He stabbed the ball into the net on the rebound after Rangers' defence could only parry a powerful shot by Symonds.
The 2-0 scoreline was no more than Boulevard deserved, and left their expectant fans just about satisfied.
In truth, Boulevard could have bagged far more if they had translated pressure into goals.
But too often attacks broke down when players ran out of ideas around Rangers' goalmouth.
Several players also appeared shot-shy, and hit trouble trying to dribble the ball into the net.
The game started 35 minutes late because of a junior match, which ran into extra time and penalties.
But Boulevard were soon into gear, with Warren, Hill and Clinton Caisey carving through Rangers with some deft passing movements.
Nevertheless, it was Rangers' Olin Jones who first found the target.
In the opening minute he fired a speculative shot from 18 yards straight into the arms of Lynn Tucker.
Jones managed a better effort 13 minutes later with a 20-yard free kick after Omari Hart had been brought down.
He struck the ball well, sending it curling just wide of Tucker's goal.
Shawn Simons also looked promising for Rangers in flashes with his lightning speed up front.
Ascento Russell, however, appeared timid in front of goal, despite finding himself in some good positions.
And, generally, Boulevard had the upper hand and dominated midfield, with Boyles playing an attacking role.
Boyles, Symonds, George Smith, and Vernon Eve all missed good first-half chances to put Boulevard in front.
The second half got off to a scrappy start, and Boulevard badly needed Hill's goal to bolster their spirits.
