BTFA in search for new talent

attending schools abroad in an attempt to lure new athletes to their programme.

The BTFA have scheduled a meeting at the Department of Youth and Sports tomorrow morning at 11.00 in the hope of discovering what interest exists among overseas students and to inform them about the local programme.

With the CARIFTA Games scheduled to take place around Easter, the Association feel that as many athletes as possible should be updated about that event along with others scheduled for the Caribbean region during the year.

"We would like to capitalise on the young students who are at school abroad with athletic talent, and meet with them so that they can find out what an event like CARIFTA is all about,'' said BTFA president Stanley Douglas.

"It will also give us an opportunity to discover what these people are doing as well as discover just what is out there as far as young talent is concerned.

"We would like to offer our development programme to everybody. There just could be youngsters out there who are interested but not aware of events we participate in, such as CARIFTA. We want them to come out and learn about the exciting things that lie ahead in track and field in the new year.'' Douglas noted that the venue for CARIFTA next year had been changed from Trinidad and Tobago to Jamaica as the former were unsure whether their track, currently being relaid, would be completed in time.

Jamaica were originally named hosts for 1997 but now other countries will be offered that opportunity, including Bermuda.

"As far as us holding CARIFTA there is a lot to investigate. Hosting a minimum of 380 athletes is a tall order. We would need partners in assisting the packaging of such a programme if we were to do it,'' said Douglas.
