Five contestants in $2m putting play-off named
Play-off at Mid Ocean Club next week were named yesterday.
All Americans, they are: Major Cohen (47) of Newton Centre, Mass, Al Flowers (36), Virginia Beach, Va., William Krepp (74), Hagerstown, Md., Wayne Lambert (71), Port Charlotte, Fla. and Domingo Valencia (49), Midland, Texas.
This phase of the gigantic golf event promises to attract almost as much interest as the appearance of the many household golfing names who will be participating in the actual tournament.
The winner from the lucky five putters will earn the right to participate in the big one - the $2 million putt final at the Westin Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida on November 29, which will be broadcast live during the Gillette Tour Challenge on ABC network.
During that encounter the winner will attempt one 10-foot putt for the high stake prize bonus.
If the putt is unsuccessful there will be a $50,000 consolation prize.
The play-off featuring the five at Mid Ocean next week promises to be almost as intense. It calls for them to attempt 10 seven-foot putts with the one sinking the most advancing to the final.
In Florida, the winner while being awarded the huge $2 million purse, will actually pocket half for himself with the remainder going to the Susan G.Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
This will mark the first $2 million purse that has been put up for the event, the last three years offering $1 million each.
John Brinson (46) of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Kirk Bryson (64) of Delray Beach, Florida and Ed Lancaster (41) of Sandy, Utah have all missed in the final.
