Heriots earn third win
Heriots finished their tour of Bermuda with a third straight victory at Nationals last night, although their defeat of the President's XV was far from convincing.
The Bermuda team dominated play from the opening whistle but couldn't turn their superiority into points and at the half were tied at 3-3. After the break, the Select side took up where they left off but were staggered by Gordon Laurie's second penalty kick of the match.
However, they were rewarded when centre Scott Correia displayed some magic with a chip over the defence that he collected himself to touch down for a try.
But this score seemed only to inspire Heriots, who began to crank up their play with the forwards using their fitness and size to full advantage.
And their patience was rewarded with a hard earned try from flanker Craig Turnbull which Laurie converted.
With the score 13-8, the President's XV refused to give up but their efforts were thwarted by mistakes in their own half of the field that gave the tourists some breathing room and before the final whistle Laurie kicked another penalty to secure the win.
Afterwards, Heriots' manager Peter Whitelaw said: "I didn't think very much of our performance. Our forwards did all right but the backs were dreadful.'' He had praise, however, for the local team. "Bermuda were a very much improved side tonight. I thought they were a far better side than the one we faced last Sunday, but in the end we had the edge with our fitness.'' Fitness was the key difference between Heriots and the sides they met during the tour, said Whitelaw.
