Jacobs on a joy ride

Local fans finally got a chance to see the West Indies Board Select bat first on this tour, and with Ridley Jacobs in boisterous form, they certainly did not disappoint yesterday at Devonshire Rec. field.

Jacobs smashed 152 not out from only 108 balls to spark the tourists to a 198-run win over a demoralised Under 25 Select.

Three quick run-outs looked to have put Bermuda's best youngsters back in the game at 204 for six, but the final result was never in doubt after the next 55 minutes as Jacobs and Nehemiah Perry (45) clobbered 149 runs.

With the young West Indians' bowling attack yet to be tested, an Under 25 Select victory looked far fetched indeed and the 47.5 overs they eventually batted were better served for practice.

Clay Smith, who is set to open for the senior national team on Sunday, took heed more than most as he stayed to the wicket for over two hours for 31.

The accuracy of fast bowlers Cameron Cuffy, Franklyn Rose and Eugene Antoine undid four of his partners to leave the local side struggling at 30 for four.

Opening bat Jason Lewis played a handsome shot off his pads for four against Rose, but that was his only scoring stroke. Minutes later he attempted to cut from too close to his body against Cuffy, and first slip Stuart Williams held a good catch.

Davon Wade nibbled Rose to diving wicket-keeper Courtney Browne after making one and a nervous-looking Mark Ray also went for one, caught at second slip by skipper Roland Holand off Cuffy.

Big Dwayne Leverock ushered confidence into the Bermuda batting, hitting a smart four through the on side against Antoine and also having five credited to his total on an overthrow by Rose. But Antoine parted his off and centre stumps when Leverock (11) attempted to play a fuller-length delivery through mid-wicket.

The going was slow at the time with Smith content to exhibit his defensive technique while new batsman Lionel Cann continued to add to his growing stock.

After playing a few loose shots, Cann settled in nicely and joined in a 56-run stand that was much needed for the Under 25 side's morale.

The stand ended on 86 for five when a hesitant Cann was beaten by John Eugene's throw from third man on attempting a second run. He made 26 from 47 balls in 54 minutes. He hit two sixes and a four.

Smith's patient innings ended when he played on when attempting to cut wrist spinner Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Smith hit two fours and a six and faced 107 balls.

The rest of the Under 25 innings was predictable though number 10 bat Del Hollis livened up things in a 45-run, 10th-wicket stand with Cleveland team-mate Diallo Sharrieff.

Hollis hit three sixes and a four in his 27 while Sharrieff was not out on 11.

Cuffy was the top West Indies bowler with two for nine from seven overs. Rose had one for 15 from six and Antoine one for 17 from six. Spinners Perry and Chanderpaul took one for 25 and one for 48 respectively.

Such was the comfort zone late in the match that skipper Holder and centurion Jacobs, the first-string wicket-keeper, each bowled.

Holder claimed one for eight and Jacobs, who swung the ball viciously both ways before tiring, took one for 32 from seven overs.

The limitations of the field and the best-prepared pitch of the tour thus far were a dangerous combination for the Under 25 Select after skipper Janeiro Tucker won the toss and asked the visitors to bat.

Anything loose went for four or six with opening bat Stuart Williams, who made 57, the early dangerman.

Diallo Sharrieff responded to his dropping from the senior team with two ineffective spells that resulted in 66 being taken from eight overs.

While Garry Williams was better on the day, he too was guilty of concentration lapses and the Leeward Islands star played no favourites.

Philo Wallace, who has two half-centuries on tour, was first to go with the score 47. On 13, Wallace played around a Williams inswinger and sent his off stump back.

Skipper Holder joined Williams and should have had an early shower when on eight but wicket-keeper Kwame Tucker failed to hold onto a chance against off-spinner Hollis.

The youngsters paid for this miss as Holder went on to make 40. The only other chance put to ground was by Sharrieff at square leg off Williams in Cann's first over.

Williams was on 44 at the time and went soon after with Cann taking a good catch inside the mid-wicket boundary off Hollis' bowling. Williams hit six fours and four sixes from 59 balls.

Jacobs, whose wicket-keeping hitherto had far outshone his batting, tore into the Under 25 bowling almost immediately.

He opened his assault by clouting Hollis for three sixes, one over long-on that might have reached Pembroke Dump had it not been intercepted.

Holder was a keen admirer at the other end until he was out lbw to orthodox leg-spinner Leverock, having hit four fours.

Bermuda's youngsters staged a mini-comeback from here -- 166 for three -- as John Eugene was run out by Leverock without scoring. Then after the classy Chanderpaul (23) added 36 with Jacobs, he was out to a direct hit by Davon Wade. And Browne completely the trio of run-outs when he took on Ray and lost.

The youngsters now looked like holding their vaunted opponents under 275 but Jacobs, and then Perry, had other ideas.

Leverock, Cann, skipper Tucker and the recalled Sharrieff had trouble containing the free-scoring Antiguan who finished with 14 sixes and nine fours.

Sharrieff's only relief came from his penultimate ball when he bowled Perry.

The tall Jamaican off-spinner struck a six and seven fours in 29 balls.

The tour continues at Somerset Cricket Club against the Cup Match challengers on Saturday (11 a.m.) where the West Indian quickies have already professed a liking for the green top.

Somerset's select, announced yesterday, is without stalwarts Richard Basden, Anthony Amory, Olin Jones and Terry Burgess while league medium-pacer Charles Swan gets a chance to show his Cup Match pedigree as reward for his fine start to the season.

overpowered the Bermuda Under 25 Select. After reaching his century, Jacobs was entertained by the Antiguan cricket personality who showed his appreciation with one of his patented head stands -- to the delight of the crowd and Jacobs.
