Lewis sinks Vasco with late strike

Dandy Town earned a berth in the final of the Friendship Trophy competition, but left it late as a Troy Lewis stunner sent Vasco packing.

It was a victory much deserved as the men from St. John's Road dominated much of what was a drab affair played in intermittent showers, making for an inordinate amount of simple mistakes by both sides.

The first quarter of an hour featured little action, but Town gradually began to stake their claim.

Lewis announced his intentions in the 17th minute, thundering an angled, right-footed blast into the side netting, much to the delight of Vasco goalkeeper Timmy Figuerido.

Play continued to meander with Town always looking the more likely to score, but the goal never came as fine moves began at the back time and again became bogged down in the face of solid defending by Vasco's back four marshalled by Donovan Livingston.

Vasco's first opportunity came in the 30th minute when a Corey Hill corner was turned goal-ward by Derek Stapley to a waiting Irving Burgess, whose clever flick between the legs baffled Town 'keeper Cymande Davis and had to be cleared off the line.

Town responded by going close to scoring twice, as first striker Darron Simons and partner Nairobi Smith conspired to make a hash of a free avenue toward goal and then Carlos Smith watched his attempted lob bounce over off the crossbar.

The second half followed a similar script, with Town unable to convert dominance into tangible reward until Lewis finally struck the winner in the 69th minute.

A right-wing corner by Peter Sampson was only partially cleared as far as the edge of the penalty area, where a lurking Lewis wasted little time in driving the ball low into the right corner through a maze of bodies.

The misery for Vasco was compounded as Hill received his marching orders from referee Roddy Burchall for swearing.

Southampton 3 St. David's 1 Southampton Rangers kept alive their chances of a Shield and League double, ousting St. David's from the former and giving themselves a berth in the final.

Still, the newly confirmed Second Division champs were made to fight from behind after Worrell Bean had put the Islanders ahead in the 15th minute.

Jason Raynor struck the equaliser for Rangers 10 minutes into the second half and the score remained deadlocked for the remainder of regulation time.

Two quick goals in the 101st and 105 minutes by Janeiro Tucker and substitute Alfred Wolffe finally laid St. David's to rest.
