third place in the 17-team limited overs league in Scotland.

Cann, the new pro at Arbroath, has been opening both the batting and bowling, scoring 280 runs and taking 12 wickets in four matches so far.

Recently against Mannofield CC he claimed three for 32, helping to dismiss the opposition for 176. Cann than scored an unbeaten 41 but Arbroath were skittled out for 152, falling 24 runs short of their target.

The Bermudian also claimed three for 32 against Fonthill in helping to dismiss them for 151 and then hit 86 not out as Arbroath replied with 153-5.

The former St.David's captain also performed well in a midweek match last week against Forfar when his 50 helped his side reach 224-8. Cann took three for 37 as Forfar were sent back for 136 in the 25-overs match.

"This is my first year as pro and the added responsibility means a lot,'' said Cann in a telephone interview this week. "It was the same as when I took over in my first year as captain of St. David's. I had my best season in Bermuda cricket.'' With the Scottish national team having qualified for the World Cup for the first time, the emphasis this season is on the limited overs game. And as key man for his team, Cann is enjoying the challenge.

"It's all about staying at the wicket,'' he says of his opening role. "The wickets are soft, so it's very hard to bat, but a lot easier to bowl on. As a swing bowler I get a lot more out of the new ball, though the balls swing a lot anyway.'' LIONEL CANN -- enjoying his new role as professional at Arbroath CC.
