Pearman wraps up BPGA title
easing to his eighth BGPA Championship title at Port Royal yesterday.
Pearman, who had been suffering from flu, adapted best to difficult conditions during the four-day tournament and finished with a final round of 75 for a 72-hole total of 299, 14 shots clear of his nearest challenger Frankie Rabain.
Both 67-year-old Rabain and third-placed Cornell Bean shot 74 yesterday, but that was not enough to threaten Pearman, who had started the day with a 15-stroke lead after a third-day 70 -- the best round of the tournament.
Rabain finished on 313, four shots ahead of Bean, with fourth-placed Darrick Douglas another two shots adrift.
Pearman plans to compete in some buy.com Tour (formerly the Nike Tour) events this year, starting in Florida next month.
To get into the field, the 37-year-old Ocean View pro will have to play in a Monday qualifying round in the week of the event to try and claim one of 12 places up for grabs.
Pearman, who retained his title and pocketed $1,400 in prize money, said the week's wild weather had not bothered him as much as the illness.
"It's been a difficult week because I've been feeling a bit under the weather,'' said Pearman yesterday. "I didn't prepare properly and I haven't really been focused. The others caught me at a weak time.
"I don't mind playing in windy conditions, so long as it doesn't start blowing the ball around the green.'' Pearman said his third-round 70 had basically ensured victory and he never felt his lead was in danger.
"I felt pretty comfortable today. Anything can happen in golf, but 15 shots is a big lead.
"I don't feel that I played real well, but I drove the ball okay. And I'm not really happy with my scores.'' ALL-STAR GAMES OFF SOC All-Star games off The school All-Star matches scheduled for tonight at National Stadium have been postponed because of a bad weather forecast.
The three matches will now be played next Friday at the same venue, starting with the primary schools match at 5.30 p.m., followed by the middle school match at 7.00 p.m. and the high school game at 8.30 p.m.
