Perinchief gets the call
against the West Indies Board Select.
Answering calls for a specialist left-arm slow bowler in the national team, the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control has opted for Perinchief over the lauded Western Stars lefty Wayne Richardson, who has not been able to commit to the national programme.
Perinchief, in his first season with Devonshire after Nationals pulled out of the league, is one of four likely changes from the last Bermuda team to take to the field -- against Pakistan on May 9.
Fit-again Albert Steede is back to captain the team while St. George's batsman Clay Smith has been recalled and Cleveland's young fast bowler Diallo Sharrieff will open the attack with Terry Burgess. Out are Stevie Lightbourne, Roger Trott, Perry Maybury and Anthony Edwards.
Bermuda will face the West Indians on June 20 at Somerset Cricket Club and again on June 27 at Lord's in St. David's. The team for the second match will be announced midway through the six-match tour.
In avoiding the dicey decision to drop a senior player, skipper Steede has been asked to open the innings for Bermuda for the first time with Smith. That has, for the time being, shut the door on Ricky Hill -- who was away for the Pakistan tour and has since been struggling for runs -- and Dexter Smith.
Hill and Smith are listed in the President's XI side to face the West Indians in the tour opener on June 19 at Lord's. Fellow cast-offs Lightbourne, Edwards and the bang in-form Andre Manders are also in the first match.
Manders' exclusion is particularly bewildering as he has scored consistently since returning to Stars from Somerset. But the Bermuda middle order has been congested for some time now and the option to instead squeeze out natural opening batsmen has seen Arnold Manders and now skipper Steede being placed in the makeshift role. Youngsters Del Hollis and Davon Wade are in the Bermuda squad for the first match but are the likely substitutes.
Right-arm off-spinner Hollis has been in the national set-up for a while but appears to be fighting an uphill battle for a starting place, while Wade's promotion comes at a time when his interest in the game is at a peak.
The President's XI is full of national team hopefuls, who are pushing for a place in the second match. Perinchief will see action here to prepare himself for the big match the next day while Hollis, and fast bowlers Herbie Bascome of St. David's and Allan Brangman of Western Stars will want to make an impression.
Also selected are St. David's Lionel Cann, who could soon be challenging the long-established seniors for an all-rounder's place, and Jermaine Outerbridge of Bailey's Bay. Both are in the Under-25 squad to meet the tourists on June 24 at Devonshire Recreation Club.
The one schedule change sees Bailey's Bay replacing St. George's as opposition for the holiday match on June 21.
With Cup Match trials hard to come by, this is a big blow for the east-enders.
They were originally scheduled to play on June 19, but when the board remained steadfast on the new schedule St. George's pulled out citing commitments to the Long Distance Comet Race that same day.
"When the board changed the date we didn't have the manpower to operate because many people have planned to be on the water for the holiday,'' said club president Clevie Foggo. "Instead of embarrassing the club I decided to cancel the game. It was going to be one of our main trial games, but I don't think it will be a setback.'' Somerset's Cup Match Select will face the West Indians on June 26.
