Police put paid to Teachers' Grand Slam hopes

Slam of trophies when they were beaten by Police in the rain-delayed Nicoll Shield semi-final at Nationals on Wednesday evening.

The Reds soaked up early pressure before Ross Webber put them in front with a neat drop goal. But Police replied when winger Troy Glasgow pounced on a Kevin Harris error to score a try.

Dave Bird and Mark Adams then set up another try for the Blues when Mike Deevy crossed following a flowing movement. Harris had chance to reduce the deficit but his penalty attempt from in front of the posts struck the upright.

Alan Oliver slotted over a simple penalty soon after the restart but Teachers came charging back with Harris crossing the line wide out in the corner.

His conversion attempt missed and it was Oliver who followed up his own speculative kick to pounce on an uncharacteristic Andre Simons error and score in the final seconds for a shock 21-8 victory.

On Tuesday, Mariners booked their berth in the final by overcoming a resolute Renegades outfit 27-9.

Two early Phil Heaney penalties were cancelled out when Dennis Faries picked up a high kick that was left to bounce once too often and he raced in untouched. Declan O'Loughlin converted.

Neil Alexander then pounced on a loose Renegade line-out tap to force his way over from 10 yards out. Winger Simon Turner then ended the half by scoring following some fine passing by Mariners. Heaney added another penalty only to see O'Loughlin reply.

Mariners' second row Frazer McDonald was then sent for an early shower by referee Kim White following a heated exchange.

Mariners' full-back Dominic Hardy ended the game in fine style by picking up a loose ball and outstripping the cover defence over 60 yards. O'Loughlin converted to set up the Nicoll Shield final with Police.

The Rothman's Shield final will be contested by favourites Teachers, who overcame Renegades 18-3, and Police whose 13-man team ousted Mariners 7-0 courtesy of an extra time try and conversion.

The final Division One league tables saw Teachers finish on top with 20 points followed by Police on 17, Mariners 14 and Renegades 9. Teachers also finished on top of Division Two with 22 points followed by Mariners on 15, Renegades 10 and Police 9.

Hibernian Rugby Football Club of Pennsylvania will begin a three-match tour next week. Schedule is as follows: April 13, v Mariners Invitational XV, 5 p.m.; April 15, v Bermuda Second XV Select, 4 p.m.; April 16: v Bermuda, 3 p.m.
