Protheroe outlasts Bentley in tense duel
This year's Bermuda Squash Club Championships produced much excitement, as over 70 persons took part, with eight coming out winners.
Lynne Bradshaw won the women's D Division, defeating Tracy Stevens 3-0 in the final.
In the C Division Lorraine Alexander emerged victorious, beating Julie Greaves 3-0.
A much closer affair occurred in the final of the B Division where Janine Bentley and Val Protheroe battled in a five-game thriller.
Protheroe, nicknamed the `Energizer Bunny' for her great retrieval skills and constant movement, went on to win 3-2.
Five women entered the A Division and when the smoke finally cleared standing alone was Jacqui White, who sailed through the competition without dropping a game.
On the men's side Stuart Lunn downed Michael Stout 3-1 in an exciting D Division final.
Likewise, Rob Mehta got past John Kelly 3-1 to take C Division honours.
Unmatched in the B Division was Rick Bartlett, who refused to surrender so much as a single game throughout the tournament. His victim in the finale was Neil Modvold, a 3-0 loser to the rampant Bartlett.
Richard Brewer brought the curtain down on the tournament, as he disposed of Dick Meredith 3-0 in a match that was much closer than the score indicates.
BOWLING BOW The race for the Barritt's Sportsmen's League narrowed as a slip by leaders Buy & Sell allowed those in pursuit to close the gap.
Causing the damage were Mini Forwarders who upset Buy & Sell 18-9 in a low scoring affair at Warwick Lanes.
The result allowed second place Pembroke Juniors to pull within two-and-a-half points of Buy & Sell. The former have 3651 points compared to 368 for the latter, while Sparks stand third at 3491 .
Juniors just escaped defeat themselves, barely edging Warwick Reds 14-13 behind David Pitt's high game of 246, which helped his squad to a team high series and game of 2,618 and 981 respectively.
Reds notched four high team scores of 2,506 (series) and 868 (game) as Leroy Ming stood out, notching a 575 series and 233 game.
Also taking advantage of the leaders' misfortune were Sparks, who bested Warwick Whites 18-9.
In the lone remaining contest bottom team Young Blood rose to defeat Social Club 22-5.
