Race fleet awaits last boat

As of last night only one boat -- Shooting Star -- had not made contact with Harbour Radio at the end of the biennial Marion-Bermuda Race.

As of last night only one boat -- Shooting Star -- had not made contact with Harbour Radio at the end of the biennial Marion-Bermuda Race. The remainder of the 84 yachts had either arrived or were so close to the finish so as to have made radio contact.

Betelgeuse and Freedom withdrew near the end for reasons which couldn't be ascertained by the race committee. However, official Henry Roberts said he had heard that Betelgeuse suffered engine problems.

Majek , a Tripp Javelin, claimed overall honours on a corrected time of 3:00:47:57, and was also first in class F. Skipper is Abbott Fletcher from Bath, Maine who sailed with a six-man crew of navigator Maxwell Fletcher, Bruch Washburn, Jim Bennett, Henry McAvoy, and David Skaling. Second in Class F went to Next Boat (Mark Ellman) and third to Puffin (Paul Hodess .

Victory in Class A went to Axel Rosenblad's Akka , which also won line honours, with second place going to Whisper , captained by Sheldon Brotman, and third, Firefly , captained by Patrick Wilmerding.

Class B saw Veritas , skippered by Phil Hutchinson, head the division, followed by Ron Noonan's Wildflower and Herbert Stacks' Fastacks . In Class C, Crackerjack with Alan Krulisch at the helm, took first place followed by Swift (Jason Ward) and Flirt (Andrew Kellogg).

William Taylor's Cadence won Class D, Mike Rouzee's North Star was second and Zephyr II , captained by Jack Noble, placed third. Class E went to Anny , skippered by Loren Vultee, with Bermudian Paul Hubbard's Tonka in second place, and Dexter Hyland's Patriot in third.

Meanwhile, nearly all of the fleet -- some 75 boats -- will compete in today's BOCA-organised Mount Gay Family Fun race, starting at 11.00 a.m, from the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Competing in five divisions, the fleet will race over a 15 mile course.
