Rain wreaks havoc as matches end in draws

both ended tamely in draws -- as constant rain on Saturday proved the big winner.

Somerset reached 203 for nine after batting first against Police at Police Field but the home team never batted after both captains agreed to call the match off with five overs of the mandatory 20 in the final hour still remaining and no result possible.

High man for Somerset was Brian Morris with 53 after coming in to bat with the score 16 for two. James Swan finished with 41 not out as Somerset did well in the conditions, with Police using seven bowlers. The most successful of the Police bowlers was Roger Blades with three for 29 from 22 overs while Freston Hurdle claimed three for 70 off 17 and Wayne Clarke two for 20 from eight. In total Somerset batted for 71 runs.

The other match getting underway was the one between St. David's and Nationals at St. David's. The game started at 12.47 and another 51 minutes was lost during the Nationals innings because of the rain, though a number of dropped catches by the St. David's fielders only served to keep them on the field longer than they had hoped.

Nationals reached 168 before declaring with Brandon Woolridge scoring 50 and Dennis Trott 31, both hitting three fours and both also being dropped, Woolridge as many as five times. Trott was put down when on just two.

Reginald Pitcher led the St. David's bowlers with four for 43 off 17 overs and Herbie Bascome and captain Lionel Cann two each for 26 and 24 respectively. In total Nationals occupied the crease for 59.3 overs.

At the close St. David's had reached 42 for three with youngster Desmond Crockwell scoring 16.
