Sasha (13) sends out teenage warning

18-and-under tennis event in Bermuda, when she triumphed yesterday in the Cromwell Manders tournament.

Fisher, who has only just turned 13, got the better of more experienced opponents Crystal Lambert and Danielle Downey to win the round-robin event at the Government Tennis Stadium.

Fisher emerged victorious from a tough match against Federation Cup player Downey, defeating her 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

And the under-18 boys event threw up a similar story, with 14-year-old Jovan Whitter taking the honours after beating 17-year-old Craig Bean, the Island's number one ranked junior, in the final.

Whitter held his nerve to take the first set 7-6 with a 7-3 success in the tiebreaker and went on to take the decisive second set 6-4.

Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president David Lambert said: "Champions just seem to be getting younger and younger. We believe that Sasha Fisher is the youngest girl to win a title in the under-18 age group in Bermuda.

"Everyone has been impressed with the level shown by our juniors. It's been a great weekend with good tennis and good behaviour and we've even seen youngsters taking their turn to sit in the umpire's chair.'' Kara Fisher, sister of Sasha, almost made it a family double celebration, but fell at the last hurdle in girls 14-and-under category.

Morgan Lightbourne took top honours, eventually overcoming Kara 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.

Miles Brewer claimed the boys 10-and-under title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the final against Jun Hardart.

Gavin Manders and Kyle Williams reached the final of the boys 14-and-under event, while Kris Frick and David Thomas contested the 12-and-under final.

Those results were unavailable at the time of going to press.

Around 60 youngsters have taken part in the event which will conclude with the doubles at the Tennis Stadium today.

The Cromwell Manders tournament, named after the former Island number one player who went on to teach hundreds of youngsters how to play the game before he passed away nearly 10 years ago, is the first junior event of the season.

The next will be played at Port Royal in April.
