Smith gets green light for triathlon
after all.
Smith, forced to withdraw as one of the local participants two weeks ago, has secured sponsorship from American Airlines and will now take part in an event which will feature some of the world's best triathletes in Bermuda on Sunday, September 24.
The local line-up will include Smith, Neil De Ste. Croix, Steve Donnelly, Mark Glusing and Shona Palmer.
Smith's participation was in doubt because he was attending school in California and was unable to come up with the necessary funds for air travel.
He quickly made his mark in triathlons, placing third in the national championships two years ago. He then moved to Hong Kong where he was then attending school and placed sixth in the Under-20 category in the Asian series last year. He finished second at an event in Taiwan.
In this year's national championships he placed third behind De Ste. Croix and Donnelly with a time of 2:13, a personal best.
The Bermuda Parks Service will once again sponsor the third annual Huw Morris Memorial duathlon on Saturday, September 23, beginning at 8.00 a.m. at Horseshoe Bay.
The categories have been extended this year to include an Open team event and swimmers and runners of any age can enter a team.
The course includes a 1.25-mile run, a half-mile swim and another 1.25-mile run.
There will be three categories for the individual event -- 14 to 18 years, 19-39 and seniors (Over-40).
Entry deadline is September 18 and forms are available at Sportseller, the Olympic Club, the Athletic Club, Winner's Edge and Parks office at the Botanical Gardens.
All proceeds will be donated to the Summerhaven Trust. Race numbers can be collected on September 22 from the Parks office.
