to lift the senior national cross country championship at Astwood Park on Saturday.

Already assured of the cross country series title with three victories this year, Smith romped over the six-loop 6.8 mile course to win in an impressive 38 minutes and 13 seconds.

Donawa, who had beaten Smith over the Ferry Point Park course earlier this month, finished 15 seconds behind in 38.28.

Lynn Patchett, meanwhile, lifted the women's crown over a three-loop, 3.4 mile course, winning in 22.59, more than two minutes ahead of second-placed Jane Christie (25.05), the first master.

The season-ending championships were poorly attended with just 17 senior men and eight women competing, some runners reportedly staying away in protest of the $10 entry fee. A fee of two dollars had been charged during the regular series.

Finishing third behind Smith and Donawa was Jamal Hart in 42.46 followed by top Master Sylvester Jean Pierre (43.33) and Tracy Wright (44.50).

Harry Patchett won the men's veterans' division in 46.39 with Dorothy Gilchrist taking women's honours in that division in 34.36.

In the junior championships, Tyler Butterfield won the 15 and under boys title in 17.35 and Ashley Robinson Roberts the girls' 15 and under in 23.04.

Terrance Dill and Terrina Nolan were the respective boys and girls' winners in the 12 and under group, and Carlo Paynter and Jessica Palmer champions in the 10 and under division.

Note: No results were available last night from yesterday's Deloitte & Touche annual road relay at Clearwater Beach.
