Somerset made to suffer as Town turn up the heat
Dandy Town yesterday recovered their sting as they piled further agony on an out-of-sorts Somerset Trojans.
After their 2-3 home defeat to PHC last week, the Hornets finally had their fans buzzing with a classy performance.
Lionel Furbert stamped his name on the scoresheet as early as the 10th minute with a superb running header from 12 yards.
With laser-like accuracy, he cottoned on to a curled cross from the left wing by midfielder Troy Lewis following a neat passing movement. As Andre Hendrickson came off his line, Furbert was able to nod the ball into the right hand corner of the net.
Hendrickson may have justifiably raised some questions over his side's marking.
But when he found himself picking the ball out of his net just 28 minutes later he had nobody to blame but himself.
A ghastly fumble of a high ball inside the penalty box presented Town striker Khari Sharrieff with the simplest of goals from virtually point-blank range.
"Even Stevie Wonder would have caught that,'' one fed-up fan shouted.
A billboard behind Hendrickson's goal -- emblazoned with the word "Butterball'' -- suddenly took on ironic significance.
For those expecting a goal frenzy, however, disappointment was to follow -- there was to be no 5-0 massacre such as that inflicted on the Trojans last week by Vasco.
And, in fact, the home side could well have opened their account, but for some woeful finishing.
Darrid Durrant, in particular, must be ruing a wasted chance in the 21st minute when he blasted the ball over the bar from six yards.
The defender had had plenty of time to turn on the ball and control it as it drifted past a static Antoine Lightbourne.
In the 64th minute, Somerset striker Rodney Bascombe proved equally wasteful after being gifted an opportunity by Lightbourne.
A poor goalkick sent the ball straight into Bascombe's path, but he lost his way under pressure from Town defenders and an advancing Lightbourne.
The ball squirted harmlessly past the right of Lightbourne's goal.
Throughout the match, Somerset lacked sufficient penetration to seriously threaten the outcome of the match.
Nevertheless, there were hopeful signs for the few fans who came out to watch a side virtually unrecognisable from the recent past.
Andrew Rahman, Keion Simmons and Lamaul Crofton, for instance, showed plenty of individual skills to promise a brighter future.
But the team are in need of a midfield general to weld them together.
In the first 45 minutes, most of the danger to Town's goal came from corner kicks by defender Rudolph Butterfield.
Jermaine Burrows narrowly missed the target in the opening minutes when he caught a looping Butterfield corner, only to see the ball go over the bar.
Once Furbert had headed home, however, the away team's confidence began to rise noticeably.
Midfielder Kurt Martin became increasingly influential for Town, spraying some long-range passes which had Hendrickson under constant pressure.
Hendrickson went some way to making amends for his 38th minute blunder with a more assured second-half performance.
In the 86th minute he denied Town a third goal by grabbing the ball from the feet of Ascento Russell.

ANDRE HENDRICKSON -- costly blunder
