Steede keeps Stars on track
Western Stars 134-1 Top batsman and skipper Albert Steede continued his domination of local bowlers with an undefeated 70 to lead Premier League leaders Western Stars to this nine-wicket victory over Cleveland at St. John's field yesterday.
After dismissing Cleveland for a modest 132, opener Steede and Jermaine Postlethwaite (56 not out) joined in a second-wicket stand of 124, taking the total from 10 for one after opener Treadwell Gibbons had been bowled for four.
In another innings filled with textbook strokes, Steede finished with eight fours and a six while Postlethwaite's knock included nine fours and a six.
Inspired by this pair, Stars were able to reach their winning target off just 22.4 overs.
Earlier Cleveland struggled against some tight bowling with Peter Philpott the high scorer on 32. Carlton Smith struck 20 and skipper Aaron Adams 17.
Veterans Gary Brangman and Arnold Manders led Stars bowlers, Brangman taking two for 12 off seven overs and Manders two for 14 off five overs. Saleem Mukudem also had a fine day with the ball, finishing with two for 24 off seven overs.

Police based their mammoth total of 284 on a 197-run fourth wicket partnership between Ferdinand Thorne and Dwayne Leverock and in the end it proved all too much for the home side, who collapsed meekly.
Thorne hammered 101, while Leverock gave Somerset's selectors something to consider in bashing 95 not out at number four.
Rec were never in with a shout as they lost wickets regularly, Winston Trott topping their batting with 26, while others in double figures included Darren Davis (21), Ricardo Brangman (26) and Cal Grimes (24).
Police bowlers shared the wickets with Thorne collecting two for 13, Freston Hurdle two for 30, while young paceman Jodi Maroni grabbed one, as did Leverock and Terry Thomas.
PHC 154 Willow Cuts 155-5 Andre Hendrickson hammered 76 not out and joined skipped Dexter Basden (38 not out) in a third wicket stand that added 117 runs to lead Willow Cuts to a comfortable eight wicket victory at Somerset.
Opener Dwight Basden added 11 while PHC's Shoron Hunt returned two for 39 off six overs.
Dwight Basden, Linje Woods and Charles Swan combined to snatch eight wickets for Cuts, Basden being the most successful bowler with three for 12 off just four overs. Eighteen year-old Woods had three for 37 off eight overs while Swan finished with two for 15 off seven overs.
Veteran spinner Kevin Fubler took one wicket at a cost of four runs as he bowled a remarkable six maidens during his nine-over spell.
PHC did well to finish above 150 after earlier labouring at 39 for five.
Charles Symonds was top bat with 30 while A.Green chipped in with 25. Sheridan Ming scored 14 and Ellsworth Bean 13.
Somerset Bridge 77 Flatts 78-2 Flatts made short work of hosts Somerset Bridge, beating them by eight wickets at White Hill with Vernon Eve taking four for 32 off 7.5 overs.
Bridge bats struggled throughout after the first three wickets went down for 12. Brian Gibbons and Denzil Dill were top scorers with 14 apiece. Other top bowlers for Flatts were Phillip Burgess with two for nine off five overs and skipper Gershon Gibbons, who had two for 23 off 10 overs.
Opener Andrew Richardson led Flatts with 33 not out while Nakia Smith was undefeated on 12 and Phillip Burgess scored 11.
S.Rangers 309-9 Warwick 148 Veteran opener Keith Wainwright struck an unbeaten 109 and veteran allrounder and player-coach Clevie Wade snatched four wickets for 10 runs from five overs to lead Southampton to victory at Southampton Oval.
Wainwright hit 12 fours and six sixes during his knock while getting support from Wade and Olin Jones who chipped in with 39 apiece. Also among the runs was Ian Armstrong with 29.
K.Minors was the top bowler for Warwick with three for 61 off 10 overs while Steven Breamer took two for 47 off nine overs.
Opener T.Douglas was high man with 36, Quincy Jones followed with 33 and J.Williams scored 29.
