Stroll in the park for Devils

St. George's proved the perfect remedy for North Village's ailments as they supplied the means for the Red Devils to end a three-game losing streak with an easy 2-0 win at Bernard Park.

After being held scoreless in the first half, skipper Elliott Jennings and substitute Sean Dill broke the scoring drought with strikes after the break that assured the home side two well-deserved points.

The result also moved Village into second place in the First Division on the basis of a superior goal difference ahead of Boulevard, but still two points behind leaders Dandy Town.

Much of the proceedings were dominated by Village's patient short passing game while the east-enders relied heavily on quick counter-attacks, most of which broke down well short of the danger area.

During a lively first half the left flank became the alley for the start of several Red Devil attacks. Playing major roles were full-back Arthur Simons, who along with Rahji Edness, Jennings and midfield maestro Andrew Bascome, made life wearisome for an overworked St. George's defence.

Still it was the visitors who got the initial cracks at goal, the first a speculative drive by striker Dean Minors after seven minutes and he followed this effort by having one blocked by a defender from in close moments later.

Village responded in the 20th minute through a hard left-footed blast by Edness, which goalkeeper Troy Hall gleefully watched arch over the crossbar.

Three minutes later some fine artistic footwork on the right between Kevin Jennings and Philip Clarke resulted in the former launching a cross that was miskicked by centre-back Franklyn Greaves, but his goof also fooled the onrushing Elliott Jennings and Hall scrambled to collect.

It was Hall again hitting the dirt in order to smother a low drive by Sheldon Franks 29 minutes into the match.

As the interval neared, traffic continued to be one way in favour of Village.

Sweeper Neil Paynter, Greaves, Andre Todd and Dean Bailey fought mightily to defend their goalmouth with some degree of success.

Attack had become a forgotten word and even the inclusion of Clay Smith -- along with Minors playing in defiance of a "no soccer'' ban imposed by the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control -- failed to make an impact.

Coming out for the second half, it was clear St. George's needed some answers, but none were forthcoming.

Elliott Jennings made Village's intentions clearer when he thumped home a rebound from 12 yards after Clarke had bullied his way past three defenders only to have Hall block his shot with his legs.

Dill, who replaced Clarke, laid his opponents to rest three minutes from time when he just got a foot onto a through-ball by Elliott Jennings, following a Simons cross, and poked it between Hall and the upright.
