Swan comes to grief at Chinaman Reef

meeting with disaster early in the final round at the Wyndham Rose Hall Resort Golf Club on Saturday.

Swan suffered a quintuple bogey nine on the treacherous 322-yard eighth hole, named Chinaman Reef. Swan hit his tee shot left into the water, his fourth into a hazard and then failed to get out of the same hazard.

It spoiled a promising start that saw the St. George's Club pro birdie holes two and three and just miss a 10-foot putt for birdie at five.

Swan settled down after his troubles on eight and came back with eight pars and two bogies to finish on 78 and 305 for the tournament, 25 strokes behind winner Tom Gillis.

"I was disappointed with the eighth hole,'' said Swan. "It was a silly mistake but I am pleased I was able to settle down immediately and keep my score respectable.'' Gillis, who captured $26,000 for the victory, finished in style with a course record 66 to win by five strokes from Dennis Clark, who earned $15,000.

Regular PGA Tour player Jim Thorpe won $10,000 for third place on 287.

Swan, who pocketed $738, was ironically bracketed on 305 with new Bermuda Open champion Jeff Lewis while Ed Kirby, who just missed out here, was joint ninth on 292. Craig Marseilles, another American who has recently visited local shores, placed 50th on 312.

Swan's next event will be the Continental Open, which starts on Wednesday in Florida. He will then compete in the World Cup in Orlando from November 11-14 with Dwayne Pearman.
