Test ace Simmons to play in testimonial

as the only international player to be brought to Bermuda for the Clarence Parfitt Testimonial match scheduled for Lord's, St. David's on Saturday, September 23.

During recent weeks the names of prominent Test players such as Carl Hooper and Jimmy Adams of the West Indies and Dominic Cork of England have been among those linked to the testimonial. But at a press conference yesterday, organiser Custerfield Crockwell confirmed that the only players arriving for the event would be Simmons and Parfitt himself, who is based in Scotland.

"The committee worked hard to get a couple of top cricketers here but there was always something coming up that prevented them from confirming after they had given a positive response,'' said Crockwell.

"We are grateful to get Phil Simmons. He is still a very good cricketer and the occasion should prove to be quite exciting for local cricket fans,'' he added.

The day's events honouring a player many believe to be Bermuda's greatest ever bowler will start off at 10 a.m. with a 20-overs game featuring several top players of the past, including Cal (Bummy) Symonds, Eldon Raynor and Mackie Simmons, while the main testimonial game starts at 1.30 p.m.

It will be a 40-overs game with the respective teams captained by Wendell Smith and Albert Steede.

According to Crockwell, it has yet to be determined which teams will include Simmons and Parfitt, the only decision made so far being that they will play on opposite sides.

The committee have chosen two squads for the main game. Players unavailable should contact the respective captains -- Wendell Smith at 297-0507 and Albert Steede at 236-7727, and also committee member St. Clair (Brinky) Tucker at 297-1597.
