Town end BAA's short stay in First Division

One issue was settled on Saturday as BAA were confirmed for the drop back into the Second Division after just one season in the top flight.

The Green Knights bade farewell following a 2-0 thumping at the hands of title-chasing Dandy Town before a scant crowd at BAA Field.

Single tallies in each half by Carlos Smith and First Division debutant Shakai Whitter accounted for the final score-line.

However, the Hornets were left kicking themselves for their ineptitude in front of goal which saw them fail to improve a goal difference inferior to that of their championship rivals.

Defending champions Town should have had more than two goals to show for a game which they dominated from the opening whistle.

Centre-back Diallo Sharrieff had the first crack at goal for the Hornets in the sixth minute, driving a low free-kick inches wide of the left upright from 19 yards.

And 10 minutes later the towering Sharrieff was again involved, floating in a free-kick from the left side to Smith, who fired his angled volley over the bar from just six yards.

BAA, meanwhile, found scoring opportunities at a premium, their first coming in the 26th minute when Mike Martin fired in a long range free-kick that Town goalkeeper Cymande Davis had little trouble collecting.

At the other end Town continued to struggle as Pernell Douglas joined the "amazing miss'' club in the 32nd minute, hitting over an open net from 10 yards after Smith had blown past two defenders on the left before squaring the ball into the area to an on-rushing Douglas.

The home side were not nearly as fortunate a minute later as Smith took matters into his own hands and put Town in front.

This time the supplier was right-back Don Lewis, who found his teammate with a perfectly flighted cross, leaving Smith the simple task of heading the ball past Paul Hayward.

Nearing half-time -- and following several more Town miscues -- BAA almost drew level when Duncan Ashworth brought fans to their feet with a sizzling volley from 20 yards that dipped just over the bar.

A carbon copy second half ensued, with Town's inability to score simple chances becoming a source of frustration.

And while Town bickered amongst themselves, BAA maintained a ray of hope that they could comeback.

But this light was snuffed out in the 70th minute when Whitter, a 61st minute substitute for Peter Sampson, marked his debut with Town's second goal, an intended cross that floated over the head of Hayward and into the far corner.

Town had the chance for another tally when referee Stuart Crockwell awarded them a penalty in the 89th minute, but Darron Simons had his spot kick stopped by Hayward diving full-length to his right.
