Venezuela trip up for grabs in golf play-off

tomorrow to decide which two players will represent Bermuda at the Simon Bolivar Trophy event in Venezuela later this year.

Hank Ascento and Bill Pitt made the trip to Caracas last year but neither are in the running this time around.

Those chasing the two spots are Barry Brewer, Chris Phillips, Andrew Waring, Winston Trott, Nick Mansell, Millard Beach, Zane DeSilva and Douglas Morris, all of whom earned a shot at making the team through their performances in Bermuda Golf Association medal events.

Official in charge of the qualifying, Brendan (Bees) Ingham, will also take part in tomorrow's play-off.

The two players with the lowest gross scores will travel to Venezuela from November 23 to 30 to take on top amateurs from both North and South America.

In the event of a tie, a four hole play-off will be held on holes one, two, three and six.

The Bermuda Amateur Mixed Foursomes Championships, called off earlier this year through lack of interest, has been rescheduled for later this month.

Couples have until September 20 to enter the Bermuda Golf Association event which has been switched from St.George's to Ocean View.

The new date for the 36-hole strokeplay competition is September 27 and 28.

Defending gross champions are Bill Pitt and Erva Robinson while Kenneth Bean and Norriette Fox won last year's net title.

Organiser Alfreda Samuels is hoping the new date and venue will prompt an increase in entries, noting that St. George's had not been popular with some of the players.

The weather, she added, had also been poor during the two years the event had been held in February.

Teams can enter by calling Samuels on 292-7507.
