Village fight back to earn replay
(after extra time) North Village and Devonshire Colts will have to do battle again for the Crystal Palace Youth Cup after 120 minutes failed to provide a winner during an exciting final at National Stadium yesterday.
The young Red Devils were forced to come from behind to force a replay, after Colts had surged into an early lead, riding the exceptional talent of young Damon Ming.
In turn Village hooked on to their own danger man, Keemo Smith and, like Ming, he did not disappoint.
Ming, also a promising middle distance runner, often ran rings around his opponents, topping his performance with two first half goals.
Barely three minutes into the contest Ming fired the opening salvo when he beat Ricardo Brangman with a shot which stunned Village.
And after 17 minutes Ming was again on target with his second goal.
But gradually the Red Devils worked their way back into the game with Smith prominent in most of their attacks.
And just as it appeared Colts would go into the half-time break holding a two-goal advantage Village hit back.
Playing a leading role was Smith as he gained possession on the left side near the half-way line, dribbled past his man before spotting team-mate Ralph Bean Jr. inside the penalty area.
Smith supplied the perfect pass which allowed Bean to control and gather himself before calmly slotting the ball underneath the body of the advancing Thomas Smith.
The second half, while not matching the pace of the first, still witnessed a fair display of attacking soccer, with play fluctuating from one end to the other.
In the 64th minute Smith got through on a breakaway, having once again eluded his marker, but watched in agony as his chip over the goalkeeper bounded off the crossbar and was cleared.
Ming responded immediately, collecting the clearance along the left flank, weaving his way through what appeared the entire defence until he was finally upended by a fierce tackle which brought about a free kick at the edge of the penalty area. Ming took the kick, but like Smith could only think of what might have been as the woodwork denied him his hat-trick.
The miss proved crucial as moments later Smith scored the equaliser. After Shane Woodley had successfully taken on the defence, he slipped the ball past the 'keeper to Smith, barely a yard out.
Extra time failed to produce a winner and the teams will have to battle again at a date and site still to be determined.
