Bascome helps Heat earn semi-final spot

Harrisburg Heat through to the semi-finals of the US National Professional Soccer League play-offs with a 14-6 victory over Baltimore on Wednesday night.

The victory saw Heat clinch the best two-of-three series against their arch rivals and last night they were scheduled to meet Cleveland in the semis.

According to Bascome, the victory over Baltimore was particularly sweet for local fans since the Heat's best player was recently traded to their opponents.

Harrisburg face a strong Cleveland side in a best three-of-five series with the other semi-final being decided between Kansas City and St.Louis.

"We have been playing quite well. Everybody is working hard and looking forward to the matches,'' said Bascome.

Interest in the games in Pennsylvania has been high with attendance averaging around 6,000.

SOFTBALL SOF Snowballs and Deloitte and Touche clinched their respective division championships on Thursday evening in the Commercial Winter League play-offs.

Ace pitcher Mario Valcourt led Snowballs to a 13-3 win over Gateway to take the Division A series 3-1. Losing pitcher was Nigel Godfrey.

Braxton Stowe went three for four including two home runs and six RBI while Bruno Richard also went three for four. Andy Cook led Gateway, hitting two homers and three RBI.

Deloitte and Touche got by Cooper and Lines 8-6 to complete a 3-0 whitewash in the Division D series.

Pitcher Marty Brandt helped his own cause goinmg three for three with two RBI while team-mates Jeff Fitzgerald and Andy Heffron also went three for three.

Bob Morrison suffered the loss while C&L's best bats were Rick Morris (two for three) and Jamie English (two for three, including a home run and three RBI).

Meanwhile, Warwick tied up their series with PTB 2-2 after a 15-8 victory.

Keith DeCosta earned the win, and Shawn Tucker took the loss.

Warwick had Scott Richard and Deon Bell to thank for some powerful batting as they both hit homers and four RBI.

Dave Morgan went three for three for PTB and Shawn Tucker two for three, including a home run and two RBI.

Warwick Workmen's Club will be holding a meeting and training session tomorrow at 10.00 a.m. for all men and women interested in playing fastpitch for the club during the upcoming season.

SOCCER SOC National Stadium will host the annual Scotland versus England soccer match next Tuesday evening (7.00 p.m.) when the Billy Agnew Memorial Trophy will be up for grabs.

The game is being sponsored by Docksider pub and a donation will be made to the Special Olympics fund.

CRICKET CRI Bermuda's national cricket squad will meet on Tuesday evening at 6.00 p.m. at the Cricket Board of Control's office to finalise plans for the tour to Miami, Florida later this month.
