Bascome still upbeat despite St. Louis rout of Harrisburg

David Bascome's Harrisburg Heat were swept away four straights in the NPSL indoor soccer final by St. Louis Ambush, but the club is still extremely proud of its accomplishments during the recently completed season.

It was the best ever season in the league for both the club and its Bermudian forward David Bascome who scored four goals in the playoffs to finish with 42 for the season, with 27 assists -- the second highest in the team.

So successful was Bascome that he is due to meet with his coach on Monday to thrash out a new contract.

Unfortunately for the club they failed to win a single game against St. Louis, going down 19-9 and 18-10 in the first two games in St. Louis and then losing the series with further losses at home, 14-10 and 14-11.

"The scores are no indication of how the games were,'' said Bascome yesterday. "We had really good first halves and we were definitely in contention. There weren't any blowouts.'' Bascome says reaching the final will have done a lot of good for both the team and the Harrisburg area. "Harrisburg is a small area but we average between 6,000 and 7,000 people to our home games,'' Bascome explained.

"This is good for the area, soccer is becoming one of the main sports in the area. The players and the owners are happy, this is the furthest Harrisburg has ever been. We would have loved to have won everything.

"It was tough, we picked up a couple of key injuries, with Danny Kelly out for the whole tournament. I had to go back into midfield to do the job he does. They (St. Louis) were a bigger and stronger team and we knew it was going to be a battle.'' Bascome is due back home in early May to prepare for another coaching clinic with Shawn Goater. He will also be doing some coaching back in Harrisburg when he returns in July, as well as playing weekends, alongwith four other Harrisburg players, for a professional outdoor team, Albany.

The New York team is one of 10 teams in their region. The league starts this weekend.
