Bay settle for tie after last ball run out

Bailey's Bay 199 A spectacular run out on the last ball of the Bailey's Bay innings earned Police their second tie of the season at Police field yesterday.

Bay went into that last over from Freston Hurdle needing four runs and with only last pair Allan Walker and Burton Outerbridge at the crease. It then came down to two needed off the final four balls and and then two off the last two deliveries as Police kept up the pressure in a tense finish.

A scrambled single on an overthrow on the fifth ball tied the scores and put Outerbridge on strike for the final delivery. The tailender came down the crease, straight drove Hurdle and started off for the single as Police captain Stevie Lightbourne moved to his left, picked up the ball and broke the wicket with a direct hit which left Outerbridge just short at the bowler's end.

It was a run out on the first ball of the 38th over that probably cost Bay their last chance of victory as the free scoring Dennis Pilgrim was left stranded at the bowler's end when Walker sent him back after a mix-up over a risky single.

As long as Pilgrim was there Bay were confident of victory but his departure for 13 left last pair Walker and Outerbridge to score 15 runs in the last three overs to seal the win, a target they brought down to four off the last six balls.

However, in the end they finished just short as Police produced a similar finish to their recent home match against St. George's.

Captain Charlie Marshall led the Bay batting with 57 including four fours and four sixes while Stephen Outerbridge scored 23 and Irving Romaine 21.

Ferdinand Thorne was the pick of the Police bowlers, claiming five for 34 from nine overs of medium pace.

In the Police innings, Lightbourne led the scoring with 86 not out including nine fours and three sixes while Dwayne Leverock stroked 55.

The pair added 121 for the fifth wicket, taking the score from 60 to 181 when Leverock departed. Clarkie Trott responded to his Cup Match axe by taking five for 38 off 10 overs in leading the Bay bowling.
