Best waiting on skipper for Caymans challenge
tonight at BAA Field in the first of two friendly internationals against the Cayman Islands at BAA Field.
Otherwise the bulk of the squad of 19 will see action for the first time this season as Bermuda take on the visiting Cayman Islands in the first two of two friendly internationals over the next three days.
Technical director Clyde Best released a squad of 19 yesterday with a question mark hanging over defender Shannon Burgess, the captain. Left back Dean Bailey was ruled out late last night and replaced by Kimandi Binns.
If Burgess, who skippered Devonshire Colts to victory over Vasco in the season-opening Charity Cup, is unable to lead the team tonight, the job will likely go to Dandy Town midfielder Devarr Boyles.
"I'm just giving him time to see what happens and if we have to bring people in, we will bring people in,'' said Best last night.
"I'm waiting on one more player, I just have to sound him out first and I might add him in.'' Troy Hall and Timmy Figureido will share the goalkeeping duties in the absence of Dwayne Adams, who is playing professionally in the United States.
The squad contains college students David Thomas from Old Dominion and Kofi Dill, while another Village player, veteran Elliott Jennings, is returning to the national squad. His experience up front will be vital.
Another member from the 1992 World Cup qualifying campaign, Paul Cann, is also back in the frame as the BFA look for experience. Bermuda beat the Caymans 4-1 in the Copa Caribe qualifying matches here earlier in the summer when striker Keishon Smith netted a hat-trick and similiar results will be sought as Bermuda's international programme kicks off.
"Obviously we don't want to lose, we're having a look at people we've had before as well as some of the older people,'' said Best.
"A number of our players are away at school -- the ones we really wanted to get in -- so this is the best we can do right now. We'll be trying to give an outing to everybody.'' Squad: Troy Hall, Timmy Figureido, Shannon Burgess, David Thomas, Devarr Boyles, Paul Cann, Reggie Tucker, Otis Steede, Meshach Wade, Andrew Rahman, Elliott Jennings, Kenny Mills, Keishon Smith, Tokia Russell, Karl Roberts, Kimandi Binns, Kofi Dill, Peter Sampson, Jahmah Samuels.
