Better late than never

Kevin Tucker as he beat 44 other competitors to win the inaugural event at Horseshoe Bay Beach on Saturday.

Tucker clocked in at 29:24 in the duathlon, which consisted of a one-and-a-quarter-mile run followed by a half-mile swim and then a quarter-mile run.

He gained momentum and sealed his triumph during the last leg after finishing third in the first running leg behind Brett Forgesson and Dyrone Minors and then a seventh-place performance in the water.

Eloy Castroverde finished second with a time of 30:26 and Trevor Todd sewed up third place, clocking in at 30:47.

First in the women's division was Christine Campbell, who finished a strong 14th place overall in 33:41. Campbell was first after the initial running leg and third after the swim behind Amanda Smith and Annette Bosch. But she sprinted out of the transition area and overtook Smith and Bosch for the title. Bosch finished second (34:10), with Kim Mason in third place (37:21).

The most exciting race of the day transpired in the junior boys (14 to 18 years) division with the showdown between Grant Smith and Trevor Hodges. Smith clocked in at 30:54 to win the division and finish an impressive fifth overall. Hodges followed in 31:02 and was sixth overall. In third place and 17th overall was Adam Smith (33:49).

Steven Petty was the champion in the senior men's division, finishing with a time of 31:06. Runner-up was Duncan Newby (32:12) who posted the fastest swim time of the event. Newton Adcock placed third in 34:08.

Another last-minute entry, Ann Lindroth, captured the senior women's division when she finished the course in 42:36. Marianne Herbert was second in 45:08 and Linda Dillon grabbed third spot when she clocked in just two seconds shy of Herbert at 45:10.
