Blazers capture crown
Boulevard's late wonder run in the league came to a glorious end yesterday when they captured the Coca-Cola First Division title for the first time since 1993 with a victory over BAA.
There was no lap of honour and jubilation was restrained at the end until the players reached their dressing room to be informed that the title was indeed theirs after Dandy Town's result was revealed -- and only then was there the anticipated uproar of cheers.
Boulevard's captain Dwight Warren said that they had come a long way after experiencing a lot of injuries and credited their success to a great team effort.
"I can say with joy that we emerged from the valley and now have reached the mountain top,'' said Warren.
BAA, already relegated to the Second Division, were expected to give a solid performance during their last stand in senior soccer -- instead they looked like lambs and seemed to surrender their dignity altogether when Dwayne Adams elected to abandon his goal-keeping chores to lead the attack after 60 minutes when the score was 3-1.
Kenny Hill led Boulevard's attack with two goals while Warren, Michael Holdipp and substitute Vincent Tuzo grabbed one apiece.
Inspired up front by Warren, Boulevard attacked relentlessly in the first half but misdirected shooting only awarded them with a 3-0 lead by the half with Hill scoring after 19 minutes, Holdipp with a fierce shot after 41 minutes and Warren after 44 minutes.
BAA scored on their first attack on goal after 53 minutes when left full-back Vince Chaves netted from a goal scramble, but that wasn't enough to give them the boost they sought as Boulevard were allowed to control the rest of the game with relative ease.
After goalkeeper Dwayne Adams had started the half by brilliantly diving to save Hill's blast from close range, Bouelvard snatched their fourth goal when Tuzo finished off a rebound from a wicked free kick taken by Warren after 69 minutes.
Hill then netted the fifth from close range after 81 minutes and Boulevard missed making it six when Dean Boyles struck a penalty against the post five minutes from time.
