Brilliant Mills fires an awesome foursome
An awesome four-goal blast by striker Kenny Mills -- three of them in seven second half minutes during which he also struck an upright -- kept PHC on course for a league and Friendship Trophy double at a windy Devonshire Rec last night.
Somerset will feel it was a poor way for the pacy number nine to have repaid them for last weekend's league defeat of North Village, which put PHC four points clear at the top of the Premier Division, but for the Zebras fans and neutrals in a meagre crowd, it was an absolute treat.
What made it all the more remarkable was that there had been little hint of what Mills had up his sleeve in a first half of entertaining end-to-end football in which Trojans had taken an early lead.
Mills, in fact, was surprisingly subdued early on, kept quiet by Karl Roberts and Calvin Butterfield at the back, while Somerset often looked the more dangerous side with Andrew Rahman, usually a wing back, pulling the strings from a less familiar central midfield role.
However, it was David Rahman who opened the scoring for Somerset, bundling home the ball at the back post from a 12th minute corner. Aaron Williams almost grabbed a second a minute later, but PHC goalkeeper Carlyle Crockwell managed to change the direction of his dive to save the shot from an acute angle.
Mills finally burst into life eight minutes from the break, taking the ball on the run from Stephen Astwood and, with an impressive economy of movement, sending it across Keenan Tucker into the far corner. PHC coach Sammy Swan, who selected himself up front, put PHC into the lead 11 minutes after the interval, nipping in behind the Somerset defence to loop a header over Tucker from Stanton Lewis's long ball.
Somerset almost equalised a minute later, with David Rahman's powerful header going the wrong side of the upright but within two minutes PHC had created a two-goal cushion. Dano Outerbridge reacted quickest to stab home the loose ball when Tucker parried a free kick from the left.
Somerset initiated a double substitution in the 65th minute as Nasir Wade and Rodney Bascome replaced Williams and Curtis Grant.
But it did no good as Mills came into his own.
He scuffed wide after an excellent interchange of passes with Swan, but three minutes later got his second, holding off three defenders as he burst through the middle and calmly slotted home.
Two minutes a later, a missile of a shot with the outside of his boot from 20 yards clipped the woodwork, but a repeat of the effort moments later from further out hit the back of the net before Tucker had time to move as Mills celebrated his hat-trick in style.
At 5-1, PHC seemed happy enough to substitute goalkeeper Crockwell, bringing on Quincy Hunt. Then referee Stuart Crockwell spotted a handball by Andrew Rahman and pointed to the spot.
Mills ran up and scored -- his sixth goal in two games -- with Tucker showing his disdain for the decision by not even attempting to save.
Astwood completed the rout, producing an immaculate finish after being picked out by a crossfield ball by Mills.
