Bromby, Lewin remain in hunt for sailing medals
Peter Bromby and Paula Lewin both remained on course for medals on the choppy waters off Mar del Plata yesterday, as all of Bermuda's sailing team took advantage of the kinder conditions.
Stevie Dickinson and crew Heath Foggo, who suffered equipment problems during Tuesday's wild and windy opening day, registered sixth and fourth place finishes in the Snipe class, world Sunfish champion Malcolm Smith improved slightly, up from 13th to 11th place in the Laser class with finishes of 11th and seventh, and although Elizabeth Walker remained rooted at the wrong end of the seven-boat Laser Radial fleet, she showed determination during the lighter conditions of yesterday afternoon with a fourth after a seventh in the morning.
Bromby finds himself in the thick of the chase for tomorrow's four J24 semi-final berths following two victories and a defeat in yesterday's races, the fifth, sixth and seventh in the 11-race elimination match racing series.
He scored a comfortable win over Antigua early in the day before losing a close contest with American Paul Foerster, but bounced back in the afternoon to defeat Mexico.
Bromby's win-loss record is now 5-2, bettered only by the unbeaten Argentinian Francisco Campero (7-0) and American Foerster (6-1). But also on 5-2 are Canadian Ross MacDonald and Virgin Islander Peter Holmberg. With the final four elimination races to be sailed today, Chile are the only other realistic semi-final contenders with a 4-3 record.
Bromby now faces what might be a do-or-die clash against Canada's McDonald today. And he must certainly register wins in his other matches against Chile, Venezuela (2-5), and Brazil (3-4) to keep his hopes alive.
With the skipper finishing on top of the elimination series getting to choose his semi-final opponent, Bromby will be desperate to win all four today and hope that both the USA and Argentina, who face a much more difficult schedule, slip up.
Sailing in the six-boat Europe Dinghy class, Lewin placed second and fourth in her third and fourth races yesterday to finish third overall on nine points.
She now trails American Kimberly Logan (2.25) and Brazil's Marcia Pellicano (4.75) but with six more races still go has plenty of opportunity to narrow that gap.
In the Lasers, Smith improved his position by two spots with finishes of 11th and seventh and now stands on 29 points. The class is being led by Brazil's Robert Scheidt (2.25).
While the wind dropped slightly and the waves weren't quite as big as during Tuesday's racing, Elizabeth Walker still found the conditions anything but to her liking.
