CAC hopefuls back in action

being lined up by Bermuda Track and Field Association in an attempt to boost the Island squad which will travel to next month's CAC Championships in Puerto Rico.

The first of two trials will be held this evening at National Stadium, aimed specifically at sprinters Xavier James and Gregory Simons, and middle distance runners Sheldon Thompson and Quennell Robinson, all of whom have so far marginally failed to reach the CAC qualifying standard.

Two 100 metre races plus an 800 metre race will be held tonight and repeated next Tuesday as well as the long jump.

Inbetween, Thompson, James and 5,000 metre runner Jay Donawa may fly to Boston this weekend to compete in a track meet.

And BTFA vice-president Bob Oliver noted yesterday that the association also hoped to organise a half-marathon early next month in order to give road runner Tracy Wright a last chance to qualify.

While runaway winner Kavin Smith easily eclipsed the 1:11 standard in Monday's Marathon Derby, second-placed Wright narrowly missed out.

Smith became the eighth athlete to qualify for the CAC team, joining triple jumper Brian Wellman, sprinters Troy Douglas and Devon Bean, middle distance runners Jay Donawa and Terrance Armstrong, long jumper Attiba Tucker and high jumper Raneika Bean.

With the deadline for reaching the qualifying standard having been extended, athletes will get their last chance at the national championships scheduled for June 8 and 9. Deadline for entries for that meet is this Saturday.
