Canaries stretched by Bluebirds
unbeaten record in the Ladies Hockey A Division on the weekend when they came from behind to edge out Bluebirds 3-2.
Third-placed Bluebirds were first on the scoresheet as they went into the break with a 1-0 lead. However, Canaries came out fighting after the interval and scored two quick goals through Rhonda Rawlins to take a 2-1 lead.
Ellen Charnley kept Bluebirds in the match with an equaliser to make it 2-2 before Ali Cameron came up trumps to score the winner and seal Canaries' 13th victory in 16 outings.
Canaries had numerous opportunities to add to their tally but some superb goalkeeping from Carla Pedro kept them out.
Cardinals remained eight points behind the leaders with a 2-1 win over Swallows in a physical match.
Cardinals provided the majority of attacks and the first of their two goals came 15 minutes into the match. Edna-Mae Tuzo sent a pass from the half-way line to Maria Pichery who dribbled it into the `D' before passing to Laura Bardgett who sent a screaming shot into the net.
The second goal came as a result of a short corner which found Pichery who fired home.
Orioles beat Swifts 2-0 with Zina Jones scoring the first after a superb cross from guest player Sharon Rajaraman 18 minutes into the game. When Swifts' Megan Spurling missed an open goal in the opening seconds of the second half, their hopes of fighting back appeared to fade.
Rajaraman also had a hand in the second goal when she ran down the right wing and set up Zones to score again.
Canaries also lead the B League, though they had to settle for a 1-1 draw with third-placed Bluebirds who took the lead through Denise O'Donaghue. The goal came after an outstanding through ball by Diana Wilson from the half-way line which rolled into the `D' to Ellen Charnley who squared to O'Donaghue.
That early goal left Canaries with a fight on their hands and they finally equalised in the second half when a well-taken short corner saw captain Lakiba Rempel fire into the net.
In the other B League game, Swifts hammered Orioles 5-2.
Megan Spurling opened the scoring after 17 minutes following a well worked free hit from Megan Leitch. Orioles replied three minutes later when Sharon Smith and Tish Parfitt teamed up to draw the 'keeper out of goal before Smith scored. But Spurling scored again moments later to restore the Swifts lead and Katie Shaw made it 3-1 before the half.
Spurling completed her hat-trick early in the second half and 10 minutes later Emily Leitch netted the final goal. Orioles pulled one back through Gertie Barker from a penalty stroke.
Newcomer Donna Edge had a busy debut and despite the scoreline made some outstanding saves in the Orioles goal.
