Contest crowned champs again
Contest winning a fourth straight Coronation Cup series and Port Royal regaining the Jubilee Cup.
Port Royal missed out on the `double', having to settle for second place in the Coronation Cup behind Contest , skippered by Andreas Lewin.
The season climaxed with the Jubilee Cup race between the hosts St. George's Dinghy and Sports Club and the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club. The race dates back to 1887 and is one of the oldest sailing events in the world.
Port Royal skipper Will White returned the prized trophy back to the RHADC as they got ahead early in the race and stayed there with Victory , skippered by Allan Powell, suffering from a couple of bad tacks. Port Royal covered Victory and by the second beat the race was all but over.
The first two races of the day were for the Coronation Cup series, with Contest leading Port Royal by 33 points entering a day which brought light and shifty breezes.
Port Royal won the first race with Victory second and Contest third, cutting Contest's lead down to just one and a quarter points and setting the stage for a thrilling final, deciding race.
Contest made some adjustments to the boat but it was Port Royal who led on the first beat before Contest moved ahead on the second beat, sailing around Port Royal's bow.
Everything fell into place after that as Contest never relinquished the lead, hanging on for victory and the title.
Port Royal took second and Challenger (Paula Lewin) third.
"Port Royal had a great season. We had some bad luck and so did they but we managed to keep our heads cool and win the day,'' said Contest crew member Kees van Beelen who has been a part of all four Coronation Cup triumphs.
"The whole season was riding on that second race and one mistake was going to cost that boat the season, basically. There was a lot of nervous energy but we take our hats off to Port Royal . They made it really competitive.
"Last year we won quite handily but this year it has been a fight. The whole season was close.
" Challenger had a really good season with her new skipper (Paula Lewin) while Echo , with Somers Kempe, who is a rookie skipper, also had a good season.''
