Eagles humiliated as Simons rifles double hat-trick
With his six-shooters blazing Dandy Town's Darron (Duke) Simons broke out of a season-long scoring slump as he unloaded on Somerset Eagles to fire a double hat-trick during a ruthless 13-1 massacre at St. John's Field yesterday.
Not even the feathers were spared as Town exposed and then devoured Eagles in this affair where the half-time score read 8-0, by which time Simons already had four goals to his name.
The home side controlled all facets of the game and, most importantly, their forwards arrived with scoring boots in tow, making life miserable for the hapless bottom-of-the-table Eagles.
After a second minute miscue when well placed, Simons started the feast in the sixth minute through a fine individual effort, taking possession just inside his opponents' half and proceeding to snake two defenders as he worked forward and picked a spot to goalkeeper Gilbert's left for his shot.
Barely a moment passed before the lead was doubled, this time make-shift, centre-back Anthony Wilson sneaking forward on the left side and squaring the ball for Khari Sharrieff to tap in the simplest of chances from three yards.
Town were now in full flow and Simons added his second 13 minutes on, being sprung by a defence-crippling pass from Walter Musson in midfield, nipping behind his marker and rounding Gilbert before placing ball into an empty net.
A brief 15-minute lull ensued before the home side surged further ahead with Simons netting his third, this after Sharrieff nodded on a long goal-kick from Antoine Lightbourne for Simons to run onto, out-pacing defenders Crenstant Williams and Jerome Richardson and picking a spot past Gilbert.
Eagles' Wallace Wellman brought out a full-length save by Lightbourne on the half-hour, but this only served to rile his side's hosts as a minute later the score-line read 5-0 on account of Ascento Russell earning his first goal with a 13-yard blast.
Sharrieff took his tally to two and the overall margin to six in the 39th minute, turning in a bullet cross from the left by Simons and Russell joined him on a pair four minutes later, forcing another ball originating from the porous left side over the line.
The first half came to a close with Simons displaying his aerial skills, nodding in a -- you guessed it -- left-wing cross from Troy Lewis at the far post.
Somehow appearing rejuvenated, the visitors came out for the second half with more purpose and almost immediately reduced arrears with Dion Minors finishing off a fine exchange with Eagles' best player, Oscar Riley, inside the penalty area.
However, Town soon restored the eight-goal margin as Simons cleaned up Kurt Martin's miss in the 52nd minute.
Simons completed a personal `six-pack' and raised the total to 10-1, scoring following a sprawling run along the left side that resulted in him slipping a shattered Gilbert yet again six minutes hence.
Town made three substitutions in the 63rd minute, clearing the bench as Joseph Weeks, Michael Richardson and Nairobi Smith were all introduced. Weeks verified his inclusion in the 78th minute as a well worked give-and-go on the right flank between Sharrieff and Russell served up the perfect opportunity for Weeks to side-foot into the back of the net.
Russell finished his hat-trick scoring three minutes from the end and Wilson finally reaped the fruit of his labour, receiving the loudest cheers from the crowd after again surging forward and this time ending the move with his own goal-ward strike.
With no light yet visible in their tunnel of futility, the West Enders can now truly figure on relegation... even with half the season remaining.
"Stick 'em with a fork, they're done,'' yelled one fan, and after the day's showing his sentiments appeared to hold some substance.
