Farewell ton for woodhead

victory over West Indian Association at Nationals on Sunday while at Garrison Field, Devonshire Stars scored an easy 69-run win over Pembroke United.

Chasing WIA's challenging 230 for eight after sending their opponents in on a grassy but benign pitch, Forties reached their target with two overs to spare to stay top of the league.

WIA, playing for the first time this season, owed their total to an aggressive innings of 92 by opener Andy Boyce which contained two sixes and 14 fours.

Boyce featured in first and second wicket stands of 41 with Douglas Joslyn and Alex Walker and added 75 for the third wicket with Olwin Clarke but, with a century beckoning, he was caught by Forties' skipper Gordon Campbell off a stinging cover drive with the total 157.

Newcomer Mike Evans, who took a wicket with his first -- and only -- delivery in Forties' opening victory over Pembroke United, effected the breakthrough with his second ball and also removed Clarke with his fourth to halt WIA in their tracks.

But Evans' figures took a battering in his fourth over when veteran Oliver Bain hammered 23 -- including three sixes -- to bring up the 200.

Woodhead, who leaves the island to return to Britain for the second time at the end of the month, lifted Forties from an unpromising 37 for two with a sparkling innings of 104 which contained three sixes and 13 fours following his 64 against Pembroke.

Woodhead, who added 70 for the third wicket with Gary Edwards (35) and 80 for the fourth with Adrian Jennings (33 not out), completed his century in style, lofting Clarke over long-off for six, but without addition to his score was bowled by skipper Ken Savoury.

Clevie Smith (17) and Jennings ensured a Forties victory by hammering 41 in 15 minutes for the fifth wicket. Jerry Callender was the pick of the WIA attack, taking three for 39 in 10 overs.

Skipper Gary Ascento and Dennis Trott played leading roles in Devonshire Stars' victory over 10-man Pembroke United, with Ascento hitting 51 in Stars' 184 and then taking two for 32 as Pembroke were dismissed for 115. Trott followed up his 31 by taking two for 28.

Michael Campbell led the Pembroke bowling with four for 57 while David Gibbs and Legay Cannonier picked up three wickets apiece.

League secretary Dave Carruthers is to call a meeting of team captains to decide whether clubs want to play each other twice or three times this season following the decision by former champions Safeguard Security last week to pull out, leaving only six clubs in the league.

To adjust the schedule there are only two games this Sunday -- Sandys Sports Club v Devonshire Stars and West Indian Association v North Village -- leaving Forties and Pembroke United with byes.
