Foggo falls just short of century

stand of 86 with fellow Bermudian OJ Pitcher as the Americas narrowly failed to win their final group game in the Plate competition of the Youth World Cup in Sri Lanka yesterday.

Foggo's 91, which included 12 boundaries, proved the mainstay of the Americas innings as they pursued the Netherlands' 226-7 in their 50 overs.

It was more than the Americas would have wanted to chase after reducing their opponents to 124-7 after 37 overs, but a magnificent unbeaten partnership of 102 by lower order batsmen E.Nawaz and F.Nijnan in the last 13 overs left them with a stiff target.

Zuakari went early for the Americas but Foggo and captain Ashish Bagai, from Canada, put on 55 in the following 14 overs before Bagai was dismissed for a fine 36 made off just 50 balls with the score at 73.

Mulla and Bailey's Bay off spinner Stephen Outerbridge were then out cheaply to leave the Americas on 103-4, but Pitcher joined Foggo as the pair boosted the total to 190 with three overs remaining.

Foggo went just nine short of a deserved century, but Pitcher carried on the attack with the lower order before he was run out off the last ball with his side seven runs short. Pitcher made 35 from just 41 balls, striking four boundaries.

Earlier, Pitcher picked up his eighth wicket of the tournament, although he proved more expensive than in previous matches, conceding 47 runs in his 10 over spell. Outerbridge bowled tidily, ending with figures of one for 30 from nine overs.
