Forlorn Police unwilling pupils as Teachers give try-scoring lesson
Teachers 69, Police 6 Teachers rightly demolished a vastly under-strength Police side playing with just 13 men at National Sports Club on Sunday.
Anthony Cupidor had a glorious time against forlorn opponents, scoring four tries and earning player-of-the-day honours.
He was assisted in the scoring department by Patrick Cooper, who notched two tries of his own as did Ross Webber, while Andre Simons, Dennis Cherry, Noel Capewell and Andrew Correia notched one apiece. Webber went five for 10 with the boot while Simons successfully slotted the ball between the posts on his only attempt.
Teachers led 45-6 at the half, with two Ian Jamieson penalty kicks accounting for the Police output.
The score would have been even higher except for hard tackling by Gareth Davies, Sean Field and Calum Welsh on the Police defence, but this was very much a moot point as Teachers ran amok.
Renegades 13, Mariners 5 The day's second game produced a more evenly contested affair, pitting top of the table Renegades against a game Mariners bunch.
Dave Bird opened the scoring for the league leaders with a blind side move from a ruck and Richard Willis converted to give Renegades a 7-0 lead which they held until the half.
From the ensuing kick following the break Williams converted a penalty to increase the advantage to 10-0.
This acted as a wake-up call for Mariners who controlled the rest of the game, but failed to adequately convert opportunities.
David Conway emerged as Mariners' player of the day and was dangerous every time he touched the ball, setting up a try for newcomer Daniel McGavern to take the score to 10-5.
Renegades responded with a crucial Willis penalty awarded as a result of dissent by a Mariners player.
Renegades then held on with a desperate defence, while Mariners failed to capitalise.
Police 8, Teachers 5 The day's opening contest on Saturday saw top of the table Police take on a determined Teachers side intent on turning the tables on their more favoured opponents.
Unfortunately for Teachers their kicker Pat McHugh did not have his kicking boots on and went 0-4 in conversions and penalties, scuttling what little chance at victory the underdogs had.
The scoring was opened by a brilliant take from Andy Wright, who collected a long ball from a Teachers' line-out, drove ahead and popped the ball to Sam Davis for the latter to outrun the cover defence and score in the corner.
Wright missed the conversion and the 5-0 score stood at the half.
In the second period Wright converted a penalty from a ruck, taking the score to 8-0, but Teachers fought back valiantly and intense forward pressure resulted in Adam Farrell scoring in the corner, reducing arrears to 8-5 as McHugh failed with conversion.
Nevertheless, the Police defence, led by Steve Parkinson, held off Teachers until the final whistle.
Mariners 14, Renegades 10 Mariners never looked back after a breakaway try from within their own 22 that saw David Bundy's score converted by Richard Atkins.
Mariners continued to play enterprising rugby and a quick penalty move resulted in Darren Dakota scoring between the posts, converted by Atkins to double the lead.
Renegades responded with running rugby, refusing to kick two penalties while opting to keep ball on ground. They finally reaped reward in the form of a converted Paul Gary Tucker try in the corner and just before the interval Huw Williams kicked a penalty for a 14-10 score.
Unfortunately the second half of the game failed to live up to the first.
