Fresh start for Bermuda quintet

lower divisions of the English League, three Bermuda internationals will return for trials this summer.

And this time Kyle Lightbourne, Meshach Wade and Kentoine Jennings will be joined by two other Bermuda international team-mates, goalkeeper Dwayne Adams and midfielder David Bascome.

Wade and Jennings, who failed at Third Division Hereford last season, will try their luck with Premier League side Coventry City while Lightbourne will go to Preston North End in the Second Division.

Adams, who had a successful trial at Crewe Alexander last year, which resulted in a one-year contract offer that he turned down, will join Bascome on trial at Stoke City who were just promoted to the First Division.

"Kentoine and Meshach are confirmed to go to Coventry for pre-season training, which starts on July 5,'' said local agent Mark Trott who was instrumental in getting the players trials at Hereford two years ago.

Trott explained that the pair will stay at the home of John Sillett, a former Coventry City manager who took the players to Hereford when he was manager there. Sillett still lives in the Coventry area.

Trott began seeking trials for Wade, Jennings and Lightbourne in April after the players were released by their clubs. "I faxed Bobby Gould sometime in April and he said two players could come over on July 5,'' Trott said.

"He said `if they are not signed by Coventry but we feel they are good enough to be recommended to other clubs we would do so','' Trott said of the fax he received from Gould who also had a look at Bermudians Neil Paynter and Philip Clarke last year.

"The big advantage for these two is they are only 20 and 21 respectively,'' said Trott who added that age counted against Paynter and Clarke. "With Coventry we've always established a good relationship with Sillett and now Bobby Gould. He said he if Neil and Philip did not work out he would would be more than happy the following season to have some more players. They (Wade and Jennings) realise this is it -- make or break.'' The trial period for Wade and Jennings will be initially for two weeks and if unsuccessful at Coventry they have the opportunity to join Lightbourne at Preston a month later for further trials with the Second Division club who just escaped relegation. "They have a couple of security blankets,'' Trott added.

"I think this is a golden opportunity for Kyle who wants to go back and prove he can make it. He wants to prove Scarborough wrong for releasing him.'' Preston's manager is John Beck who was at Cambridge United when Bascome went there for trials a few years ago.

Bascome, a professional for indoor side Harrisburgh Heat in the NPSL, is still anxious to play professionally in England as is Adams who is on a soccer scholarship in North Carolina. Stoke City manager Lou Macari is prepared to look at the pair.
