Garner asked to `double up'
Testimonial cricket match at Somerset, starting at 11.00 a.m.
Consideration was yesterday being given to having the former West Indies Test paceman bowl for both teams in order to give local cricket fans chance to see him in action throughout the day.
St. Clair (Brinky) Tucker, a member of the testimonial committee, said if the idea was accepted Garner would be asked to bowl in short spells for both teams.
As of late yesterday it still had not been determined which teams Garner and his former Test team-mate Gus Logie would play for -- either the A team captained by Gladstone Brown or the B squad led by Neville Darrell.
"We think it would be a good gesture to have Joel bowl for both teams and we are sure he would enjoy playing this role,'' said Tucker.
"He's a big name in cricket worldwide and this step would give locals a good chance to see him in action, though perhaps at a milder pace than in his prime.'' Because all those playing today are coming out of retirement, the 40 overs game will include a long break at the half-way stage and the water breaks may also be extended longer than usual, according to Tucker.
Several side attractions have been organised to entertain the crowd throughout the day and added features include a raffle, the winner of which will earn a trip to a Test match in the Caribbean next year. Winners of that and other smaller prizes must be present during the draw at the end of the match.
The club balcony has been set aside for senior citizens while a hospitality tent will be available at the eastern end of the ground for invited guests.
And for the sick and others unable to attend, Jim Woolridge will broadcast the game on VSB throughout the day.
Honourees this year are Anthony (Sonny) Roberts, Anthony Madeiros and the recently deceased Amon Hunt.
Teams are as follows: Team A: Gladstone Brown (capt), Barry DeCouto, John Tucker, Randy Butler, Quinton Sherlock, Gordon Campbell, Bernard Brangman, Melvin Roberts, Frank Bento, Ronald Madeiros, Charles Fubler, Albert Donawa, Colin Blades. Manager Randy Horton, assistant manager Charles Daulphin.

Cleveland County's fate is in their own hands tomorrow when their clash against Willow Cuts at Wellington Oval will determine who will be relegated from the Premier Division Overs league -- Cleveland or Bailey's Bay.
The cricket league season ends tomorrow with that one game and a First Division overs clash between St. David's and Warwick at Lord's, both of whom won promotion this season. The two games will start at 12.00 noon.
Somerset won Thursday's annual Old Boys' charity cricket match against Harris Bay at Harris Bay, thanks to some heavy hitting by Herbie Brangman in the final over. Scores: Harris Bay 243-8, Somerset 247-7.
Brangman struck 88, including a hefty six at the end to secure victory for the west enders whose batsmen combined for 18 sixes. Also among the runs were Edwin Bashir (38), Gerilyn Simons (36) and Milton Pringle (24).
Monroe Darrell and St. Clair Isaac combined for four wickets for the home side, Darrell taking two for 35 and Isaac two for 34.
Maxwell Musson and Michael McGowan had solid batting performances for Harris Bay, Musson stroking 76 and McGowan 67. Gary Williams followed with 36 and Dennis Wainwright 25.
Bernard Brangman led Somerset in bowling with four for 80 while Gerylyn Simons had two for 38.
