Gibbons' late charge fails to save Bay
Bailey's Bay 153 St. George's moved into first place ahead of idle Western Stars with this 27-run victory over second-from-bottom Bailey's Bay at Wellington Oval in the Premier Division Overs competition yesterday.
Former Cup Match player Noel Gibbons threatened a late charge for Bay when he and last man Stephen Outerbridge added 22 for the final wicket before Outerbridge was dismissed. It marked the fourth Overs match loss for Bay in five outings.
When Outerbridge was adjudged lbw by Jeff Pitcher -- the seventh such decision he gave in the game, including five against St. George's -- Bay still needed 28 from five overs.
Gibbons was left unbeaten on 40, having batted for 139 minutes, while Glenn Blakeney was next high for Bay with 35, including seven fours. He and Roger Trott added 48 for the third wicket in just six overs, Bay having been reeling at 3-2 after the first two overs.
Herbie Bascome claimed four for 39 from 10 overs and Kenny Phillip and Mark Ray two wickets each.
High man for St. George's was captain Clay Smith with 42 while Lewis Foggo scored 31, Jason Lewis 26 and Mark Ray 23. Corey Hill claimed three for 39, Clarkie Trott two for 23 and Gibbons two for 66. St. George's lost their last three wickets on 180.
Devonshire Rec. 204-5 Police 205-8 Hard-hitting Michael Jackman prevented Devonshire Rec. from scoring a second straight surprise victory yesterday.
It was Jackman's brisk, unbeaten 20 with only a handful of overs left that enabled Police to win this game at Police Field as he slammed bowler Leon Place for two massive sixes with his team still 13 runs short of victory. He then added the single to secure the win.
In a game that was reduced to 46 overs because of a late start, Police reached their winning target off 42.4 overs.
With Place coming on for a second spell which produced three quick wickets, the stage was left for Jackman and Terry Thomas (one not out) to survive the rejuvenated attack with the Police score on 192-8 in chase of a winning target of 205.
Forced to leave the field earlier because of a headache when Police were fielding, Jackman showed no signs of that ailment as he dispatched Place to mid-wicket and mid-on with relative ease to take his team within reach of victory.
Earlier Police got good support from opener Dwayne Leverock who scored 62, a patient knock that saw him bat for 180 minutes and hit three fours.
Skipper Dennis Archer scored 39, Ferdinand Thorne 31, Andrew Rollins 16 and Donovan Livingston 10. Place finished with four for 59 off 9.4 overs, including a maiden, while Wilfred Hudson took two for 26 off eight overs and one maiden.
Devonshire skipper Anthony Amory led their batting with 51 (seven fours), while Donald Norford scored 48, Dexter Smith 36 and Place 34 not out.
Thorne was top bowler for Police with three for 44 off nine overs.
Southampton 71 Willow Cuts 73-3 Willow Cuts made short work off Southampton at Somerset, winning a game that ended at 3.50 p.m.
Southampton fielded just 10 men and had only one player, Keith Wainwright, in double figures with 30.
Ossie Hinds did the bowling damage for Cuts with four for 20 off nine overs while Charles Swan snatched three for 36 off 10 overs, including three maidens.
Cuts needed only 17 overs to reach their winning target with Dwayne Basden scoring 21 not out, Dwight Basden 20 and Jermaine Warner 10. Southampton skipper Olin Jones took two for 11 off three overs, including a maiden.
Smith's team 194 Minors' team 195-4 Ex-Cup Match players Noel Gibbons and Arnold Manders boosted their chances of recalls on Saturday when they both got among the runs in this shortened trial match at Wellington Oval.
Both teams played with nine men after the heavy rain delayed the start by three hours, leaving the teams to play a 40-overs match. Gibbons was high man in Clay Smith's team, scoring 65 from 10 boundaries while Clay Smith added 37, Leon Place 23 and Ritchie Foggo 18.
Gregg Foggo claimed three for 23 off eight overs.
Manders also performed with the bat, stroking 60, including five fours and four sixes as Dean Minors' team won with 3.3 overs remaining. Minors was there at the close with 41 not out while opener Dexter Smith scored 22.
