Goater set to celebrate Man City `century'
Tranmere Rovers.
And if he can find the net three more times in City's last four games, the Bermudian striker will accomplish something not done by a City player in almost 30 years...30 goals in a season! To mark Goater's 100th appearance for the club since his March, 1998, transfer from Bristol City, the club's superstore is selling a special edition tee shirt emblazoned with the words "Feed the Goat''.
City fans have created a song for Goater this season -- "Feed the Goat, he'll score''.
Goater said releasing a tee shirt was common practice at City.
"It's one of the things you have to do, part and parcel of life at City,'' said the striker on the club's website this week.
"It is good banter and when the other lads have had similar tee shirts produced, there has been a lot of stick flying around.
"No doubt I'll be in for a lot of ribbing. It's all good PR for the club and the team and I enjoy it.'' And while it may have taken the Bermudian international almost two seasons to win over the fans, he is now a Maine Road favourite. In fact, his 27 goal season -- his most productive in English football -- has made the former North Village player the leading contender for the supporters' player of the year award, the Junior Blues' version of the prize and the Professional Footballers Association First Division player of the year award.
This weekend could be City's most important of the season as they also meet Portsmouth away on Easter Monday.
In fact, the next six days could determine whether they gain automatic promotion to the Premiership as they meet Birmingham City in their penultimate match before an away visit to Blackburn Rovers on May 7. That match is already a sell-out.
Goater felt the draw last weekend against Grimsby brought a sense of reality into the squad for the promotion run-in.
"It's a case of reality now,'' said the top scorer. "That draw has shown us that we have not achieved anything, it says you have to deal with the next game and win it.
"Perhaps in the past we have thought too much that we were up. We are still in control and it is still in our hands.'' The draw against Grimsby enabled Ispwich to move to within one point with four games remaining, setting the stage for a fierce battle for the second promotion spot. Ipswich are away to Queens Park Rangers today before taking on another London team, Crystal Palace at home on Tuesday.
"You look back and see how you could improve,'' said Goater of last weekend's 1-1 draw.
"At the same time we want to wipe that game out of our minds and start again.
It is about the next game now.
"When we have done that in the past we have gone on to win. That's what it's about now.'' Goater will be aiming to end a three-game scoring slump as he looks to move closer to the elusive 30-goal mark.
Goater has scored 51 goals for the club in his 99 appearances, making him at 400,000 one of the club's best buys.
Not since Francis Lee notched 33 goals (13 penalties) in the old First Division in 1971-72 has a City player scored 30 goals in a season.
The record for City is 38 in a season which Tommy Johnson managed in the 1928-29 campaign.
Shaun Goater: 100th appearance for Manchester City.
