Hamlett checks village's march
League was thwarted by West Indian Association on Sunday while Sandys Sports Club scored an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Devonshire Stars.
Half-centuries by opener David Scraders and Elliott Jennings helped lift Village to 219 for eight at Shelly Bay but opener Patrick Hamlett led a spirited reply by WIA with an innings of 80 that contained 11 fours.
WIA closed on 183 for seven, the draw leaving Village five points adrift of Forties after two rounds of matches. Forties and Village, who shared the league championship last season, meet this Sunday at Nationals.
Scraders' 57 contained six fours while Jennings struck nine fours in his 52.
George Jackson and Alex Walker each took two wickets for WIA while Village's Donville Yarde followed up his seven for 12 in the opening match with four for 64. Elliott Pitcher took the other three wickets to fall at a cost of 32 runs.
A fine 12-over haul of five for 54 by teenager Terence Corday, Jr., coupled with four for nine in four overs by Anthony (Skeets) Zuill, helped Sandys Sports Club bundle out Devonshire Stars for 106 in 25 overs at the Royal Naval field, despite a fighting knock of 54 by opener Kirby Grant.
Troy Berkeley (33) and former St. Michael opener Leon Dickinson, who made 23, laid the foundation for Sandys' easy victory, which was completed in only 21.5 overs and avenged two league defeats at the hands of Stars last season.
This weekend's other matches pit Sandys against Pembroke United and Devonshire Stars against West Indian Association.
A decision on whether the league's six clubs will play each other twice or three times this season will be made at a captains' meeting to be called by league secretary Dave Carruthers next week.
